puppy not liking treats??? We just got our baby Friday. He is 13 weeks and will not eat any treat we give him. He puts it in his mouth and spits it out. We tried peanut butter kongs, cheerios, peeled apple, and the chicken bones they chew on. Are all puppies like this at first? |

I don't know if they are all like that, but I can tell you alot of them are! We have one very picky eater! She's almost 2 now, but we have always had to change foods and treats because she seems to get bored and just won't eat! She's not food motivated either! It's trial and error, just keep giving him different things until you hit upon what he likes! Is he eating food, but not treats? We put a little bit of green beans and/or carrots, plus a little wet food and warm it up for a few seconds and that works pretty well with our little picky girl Wrigley! |
I wouldn't worry about him not eating treats so long as he eats his meals well. He'll soon realize how great treats are! Be careful not to spoil him too much with special treats in an attempt to appeal to his appetite — he may end up being a picky eater and forgo his regular food for the good stuff instead! |
Personally, I don't believe in giving treats when they are that young, I know human babies are much more likely to develop allergies when a new food is introduced too soon. It's good to free feed the first 6 months of life, and this means the dog will only eat when hungry. Dogs go through growth spurts and will eat more at some times than other times. I'm a little surprised you give him chicken bones for treats, are you referring to raw bones? Isn't there some age limit for this? Sounds like your puppy knows what best for him, but remember most treats have lots of fats and sugar, neither really good for your dog. |
My boys are almost 3 and they don't like apples or peanut butter .... they don't like anything pb flavored either. They don't like all natural (homemade) treats either. So yeah some dogs can be super picky! |
No not a real bone, the ones from the bed store the nyla bones that are flavored. I will try more. I just wanted to use them to praise him after he goes potty outside. |
My puppy doesn't really like treats either :( I've tried a few different kinds, but he always spits them out. Someone on here mentioned yoghurt drops ... I have yet to buy some because I haven't had the time, but hopefully I can get some today & try those out. The people on YT have said that their Yorkies LOVE the yoghurt drops, so maybe you could try that? Amy |
Try Yorkie Yummies from Chattiesmom. Here's the site: FoxyPups - Yorkie Yummies - Yorkie treats One of my senior girls refuses all treats except Yorkie Yummies. Actually turns her sideways and puts her nose in the air when I offer her something else. Most of the treats I get are wheat, corn, and egg free because of my Pommie who is allergic to those ingredients. Good luck. |
