vet techs are so ignorant
 

i would just like to take this opportunity to remind you all that vet techs are ignorant, and if they say something stupid, well....... they just cant help it, they were having a "stupid" moment..........
Today i took my kitty mina to get her second dose of shots and her dewormer, and teh vet tech asked me what kind of flea medication she is on..... i told her nothing, i just give her flea baths because she doesnt mind the water....... well this woman looked at me like i was INSANE, and told me FLEA BATHS ARENT GOING TO HELP!!! (exscuse me????? they kill fleas dont they???? granted they dont get the eggs........ but still......) so she goes on to tell me that i should really get her on advantage blah blah blah, so i told her........ i will be sure to do that when she is finally TWELVE weeks old (shes not this old yet) and also the recomended age for that type of flea medication, and i also told her i will be getting it through drfostersmith.com because THEY dont overcharge for there flea meds.......... lol.... she just looked at me dumbfounded (i think she was a little shocked to finally get someone who KNEW what they were talking about....... i wanted to BECOME a vetrinarian for gods sake, i could have ordered her shots and done them myself.... im just lazy)....... anyways, vet techs say stupid stuff, they are not fully qualified doctor and the best any of us can do is to "stick it to them" and teach them a lesson :rolleyes:

I too have experienced the stupidest vet techs ever! Every one, every time.

Its funny because the two vet techs that I deal with are extremely knowledgable while my vet can be a ditz. They always tell me there's places I can get stuff for cheaper (like I don't know that already :rolleyes: )

i am a vet tech an i am not stupid , i don't try to sell products to clients , I am sorry you had a bad trip to the vets office but don't judge all vet techs the same.

I didn't mean to insult at all. I know that not all of them are. Maybe it is the vet that I go to. Very young girls who say things that are just flat out inappropriate.

Don't judge all techs just because you had a bad one. I give shots to my farm dog, cats and all my horses. I am as good with a needle as most of my vets but when it comes to my little yorkies I take them in the office and let the vet tech do it. She is very good and extremely knowledgable. And the best part, she loves my dogs and sweet talks even my biggest chicken.

Out of approx. 25 techs on all the shifts at my vet, there is only one that I have had some words with. She is a passionate Westie rescuer and had issues with my breeding decisions. I took her in an exam room and told her if I didn't know her motivation I would have demanded right there in that crowded waiting room that her a*+ be fired. That was tude, not knowledge based.
BUT, if we cannot vent on such a great forum as this, where can we go?
BTW, I am asking the inquirers for puppies when they call, to please register and become a member of this forum so they can learn the REAL feelings OWNERS have and the ups and downs of mothering a Yorkie puppy!! And, get usable knowledge they can apply every day..

I love our techs...and our vets, I'm real lucky to have them so close. The techs make a huge fuss over every animal that comes through the door and always have a kind word, even if they are having a crappy day. Actually when they are having a bad time of it...they just get funnier....and when pups come in, everything halts 'til they all get a peek and a cuddle .

i wasnt judging all vet techs, this is the same vet that i go to for my dog toby and they have in the past been really nice and knowledgable, unfortunatly not all of them are, which is what i was referring to, please note in my original post i wrote "IF they say something stupid" meaning that they dont always............. i never judge a whole group of people by the act of just one person, and dont intend to start now........ im sorry you took offense, but it was really not directed at vet techs as a whole it was mostly directed towards the oen or two "stupid" ones in that particular office.....

The vet techs at my vet seem very knowledgable. They do a super job. BUt there are 3 of them and they have been there a long time. I think it helps that they are older and wiser :D

I agree that I love my vet techs better than the vets. They have time to talk and play with the puppies. They have great annecdotes and stories. One's mother has a yorkie and she is looking forward to getting one, too. She is my favorite. When they give questionable advice, I usually check with the vet - then here. I would take YT'ers advice over my vet anyday.

Thankfully I have never had a bad experience with the techs.. They all seem to be very kind and knowledgeable in general... but I agree with Laura.. I would take YT'ers advice first.. Most people on this forum really know the breed and know it very well..

Hi...It sounded like you had a bad experience with one tech...but can I ask what kind of Flea bath on the kitty ? I know some of the shampoos/dips on the market are really dangerous for cats.

A LONG time ago - I used Hartz....this is like 17 years ago - and my cat started foaming at the mouth from the shampoo - I took him to the vet and they said NO Flea Dip for him - I ha him done at the vets after that -

JUST LAST year - Hartz is pulling these products - I used it 17 YEARS ago - and they're just NOW getting around to telling people how dangerous it is ? I could have killed my cat - I don't want the same thing to happen to you with Flea Dips - I'm sure you're using something less Toxic...My cat was fine and lived to be 16 - but I shudder now thinking what I used COULD have killed him !

Just as with any group of people in a profession, you will have good and you will have bad...I have dealt with vet techs who were more forthright and caring than the vet and then I have had vet techs who were like robots and just did what they were told to do with no humanality involved. Primarily though, I have enjoyed the vet techs more than the vets. Vets tend to not give the entire story and I always feel like they are only half answering my questions and concerns and I always see $$ signs in their eyes. Not all are this way mind you, but I would say the majority that I have had experience with.

I find it extremely important to know as much as possible about a given situation when dealing with the health of my pets. I never blindly trust the vet anymore. I have learned the hard way and seen others do the same. There is not the same standard applied to vets as there is to people doctors so vets don't have to disclose side effects, benefit vs detriment and they don't even have to get permission before performing a procedure on our pets if we are not there!! Even car repair people can't do that, but vets can!!

Anyway, do your research and you won't be sorry. Find a vet with great staff who know as much as possible about the needs of small breed dogs and one who truly listens to your concerns and doesn't try to make
you feel like you don't know what you are talking about and answers your questions without obvious discomfort.
