Our New Family Mermber Well We got our new family member yesterday afternoon and she is adorable. It appears that she has never been socialized and has never been around any men. She took instantly to my wife but will not let me get within 10 feet of her. She is really scared of me. What is the best way to handle this situation. She does not growl or try to bite - she just starts backing away and runs. Thank you for any suggestions. JRP in South Carolina |
Congatulations on your new girl! You can try offering her treats in your extended hand but don't force her to accept them. Everything is new to her. She'll come around with time, patience and lots of love. Hope you can post some photos of her soon. Enjoy! |
I just rescued a little girl from a puppy mill and she was the same way.. I handed her to my husband and he sat down with her and just loved on her and talked softly to her and petted her for about...well as long as the deadliest catch lasts and after that, she just started coming to him on her own...She would not go near him on her own which is why I handed her over.. She realized quickly that he was not going to hurt her... Maybe it will work for you.. How old is she? We would love to see some pics... |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! It is not uncommon for Yorkies to be shy when going to a new environment. How old is your new Yorkie? You just need to go slow with her and let her get used to her new surroundings and I am sure she will come around. It helps if you can get down on her level. Sit on the floor and offer her a treat. Let her get to know you. We will be looking forward to seeing pictures of her. |
Congrats!!! Congratulations on your new addition! Just take it slow she will come around, when we got our OESD he was 6 months old and terrified of my fella! He would back up barking and pee all over the floor whenever my fella went near him! We just gave him some space and let him come around in his own time, it didn't take long! Maybe you could feed her all her meals and treats so she associates you with nice things! Keep your voice low when around her and try not to stand right over her, get down on the ground whenever possible! Don't try to force her round she'll soon understand you mean her no harm! Good luck, I can't wait to see pics! |
Congratulations. All of the above is great advise. If I may, I have another suggestion. Try to include some one-on-one time with her. This time would include you feeding her and taking her for walks (or 'carries'). Just you and her, bonding, with no other distractions. Best wishes. |
