New Petland Opening
 

I just found out there's a Petland opening this Saturday In D'Iberville, MS which is very near me. They advertise, among other things, purebred puppies. I've read some very bad things about them on YorkieTalk and hate to see one opening up here. I plan on going to their grand opening this Saturday and do a little snooping around to confirm what I already suspect (know), which is that this store is an outlet for puppy mills. If anyone is in the area and would like to come help 'stir the pot', you're invited :D. I already have a few things in mind to ask while inquiring about their puppies, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I've been Petland a few times just to walk around - I refuse to ever buy anything from that place - I HATE THEM ...just hate them

yes that's a strong word but based on what I saw and read - Pet Land should be renamed PetPrison.

The puppies I saw were just miserable and lonely & some were very sick looking ...I was asked to leave the store a long time ago cause I asked questions (kind of loud)....about where they get their puppies and why did they look so sick and unhappy ....they didn't answer but (nicely) asked me to leave which I was more than happy to do ...but I literally had tears in my eyes driving home.

There is a different Pet Store near me (Pet Depot) ....while I'm against selling dogs in stores - these puppies were in a big clean enclosed area PLAYING - while at 'Petland' ....they keep them in tiny cages all alone. They look sooooooo sad.....

From what I've read (and I read ALOT about them) they are the #1 Customer of Puppy Mills.

Did I mention I hate them ?

ps....The only reason I went into PetPrison (Petland) was to look at shampoo back when Chanel was a puppy. That 1st visit was what prompted me to sign up with PETA - when all the material came to my house I jokingly told my husband it was because I was going to CHAIN myself to PetLand -

he believed me ...

but no - I never did do that much as I wanted to.

People need to protest ANY opening of Petland in their area - do all you can to keep them from doing business in your town - I know it's only a small thing - but maybe some Mill dogs will some day be saved from a life of misery.

They are growing more and more every year. They just opened a new one in Austin a few weeks ago. I haven't been in it. Just passed by a few times at night and see the lights in the inside on...

O.K......here's what's up so far. I spoke with the Humane Education Manager at our local Humane Society. She was very disturbed to hear of them opening here and was quite upset about it. There was a volunteer there that recently moved here from Florida and she was well aware of Petland. She spoke to the manager before I did and clued her in about Petland. The manager writes a weekly column for our area newspaper and said her next column will be on this subject. I gave her research info about Petland and told her how to find out more. I also spoke with a producer at our local TV station and sent them an e-mail detailing some things about Petland at their request. It is being passed on to the assignment producer who was on set at the time of my call. I'm waiting to hear back from him but the producer I spoke with seemed quite interested so maybe we can get some action out of them. I think maybe I've gotten the ball rolling but I will see this through to the best of my ability. If I hadn't been a member here, I would never have known about this company and the horrible things they do. Thanks to all who have posted in the past about Petland. Good for you, I hope the paper will inform people that buying from a pet store is not a good idea, but sometimes with all the advertising dollars these stores put out, the newspapers don't want to get to involved. Keep us informed.

I don't know of any petlands in CA, when I first got to Texas I saw one and thought it was kind of like a petsmart but now I know different.

The lady at the Humane Society has a guest column every Sunday in the paper. She didn't specify that she would be writing about Petland in particular. My guess is that it will be on puppy mills and pet stores and the connection between them. She is not a staffer at the paper so I'm pretty confident it will get published as it doesn't go through the normal editorial channels. From looking at their website, Petland has 140 stores with plans to open 25 more this year. they operate in 30+ states plus several foreign countries.

I wish I were closer, I'd come with you! I HATE these puppy stores!!!

I would be willing to bet that they will tell you they get their puppies from local breeders and never get them from puppy mills or farms. That's what they ALL say!!! I have inquired into MANY of them, and that seems to be their classic answer around here.:rolleyes:

I am so glad to hear you are trying to get something done. I have been trying to do the same here, but I've found that Ohio has horrible humane laws.:mad: So, I'm thinking I have to start there and try to get some of these laws changed.

I refuse to buy anything from Petland here. It breaks my heart to see all the puppies in their little cages. The last time I was in there, they had their little "play room" with a litter of yorkies in it. The bottom half of the door was closed and all these little kids were ooo-ing and ahhh-ing, peering over the door at the puppies. When I looked in, I saw them running at each other and barking and tackling and sliding along the floor... RIGHT THROUGH PILES OF FECES AND PUDDLES OF PEE! None of the workers were watching them, who knows how long they were in there playing in their own filth. It disgusts me. A coworker (and dog lover) told me she bought her first two dogs from there when she didn't know any better. She's lucky her dogs are healthy, but she felt so bad about finding out that their dogs are from puppymills that she went and volunteered at the SPCA for a long time.

I just went to their website. It's nice how the main page makes it look like such a pleasant place to go to :rolleyes:
I see though that CA is one of the few states that doesn't have any of their stores.

that's a GREAT START !! She may not be able to mention the store by name due to any ad revenue but whatever happens - at least people are trying !!

I recently discovered that there is a new Petland in Wentzville, MO and I went in and looked at a yorkie. A lady who worked there told me she was $1,200. I told her I wasn't sure about her (I had NO intention of buying her) and she told me that if I call back BE SURE to ask for HER. I called back the next day and talked to a young man who worked there and asked how much the yorkie was (I gave him the 'stock' number for the puppy) and he quoted me a much lower price. I asked him where the puppies come from and he cheerfully told me that "most of our puppies come from the Hunte Corporation. The owner of Petland and the owner of the Hunte Corp are best friends."

THAT'S where they get their puppies, according to their own employee.

Hunte Corp is a PUPPY DISTRIBUTOR ! aka - broker. They make their millions off the backs of Puppy Mill dogs. :mad: They are NOT the ones who supply the dogs - hunte corp GETS The dogs from Puppy mills - it's sickening -

They're the ones who are in charge of cramming hundreds of puppies into HOT 18 wheelers and delivering them all over the country.

I know exactly how you feel! I went into a pet store last weekend just to check it out. It's called "Pet's Choice", and I had never heard of them. I actually went in to see what kind of products they sell, not realizing they sold puppies. They had several yorkies in a cage who were having a horrible time walking on the wired bottom. They were peeing and pooing everywhere and were trying to play, but it was impossible because of the wire! There was ONE bed in the cage with 7 dogs, 5 of which were yorkies. It was a small bed and these puppies were very tiny, but they could have at least put a couple more beds in there!

The lady who was working there at the time was busy with a customer, so I left and went home and called them. A man answered and I asked him where they get their puppies. He told me from local breeders, they never use puppy mills or farms. Yeah right. I told him most reputable breeders that I know would never sell to a pet store. He hung up on me!!!!!:mad: I called the Humane Society, but I don't know if they will do anything.:(

i went into petland the other day cuz my bf wanted to go to a store that was right beside it.. anyways.. they were selling Yorkies that looked soo sad. They asked me if i wanted to hold one of the puppies and i said sure.. They brought out a little girl and she was heavy.. she felt to be around 4 pounds and i asked how old they were.. the lady said she was 8 weeks old only.. Saddest face ever.. No energy at all.. no matter how we touched it or tried to get it moving.. it just laid there on my arms.They told me she was "$2000" I also asked where they got her.. and they only said from a Local Breeder and that she was a pure yorkie..

I went further looking around and i saw one that looks like they have pink eye and others that werent energetic at all..

Dont think i'll ever buy from a pet store *sigh*

Print out some things on why to not go to petland & Put them in people mail boxes.

No Villette - NO one could hate them more than I do. I got Mia there 2 yrs ago. They lied about how old she was. They told me she was a "special order" that the lady did not pick-up. They charged me extra because she was small, and a puppy pkg so with taxes it came to $3000.00!!! They said I could breed her if I wanted to. They have on their website that all their dogs come from breeders - not puppy mills. Well they are right on one count - they buy hundreds of puppies from the Hunte Corp!!! Both of them profit off these tiny babies!!! :mad: My Mia was only 1pd 10oz when I got her and they claimed he was 12 wks old. RIGHT! She'd been on the road from breeder, then to Hunte Corp and then trucked into Vegas - they claimed she's only been there 2 days. Well that might be true but after being on here and finding out about weights, ages etc. I'm fairly sure that my Mia was no older than 10 wks when I got her so I wonder how old she was when she was forced to leave her Mom. My baby didn't know what a doorbell was - she barely knew how to bark! She was not socialized and we had to literally feed her with a syringe -- Oh I could go on and on but the bottom line was when I tried to get her AKC papers they lied and put me off over and over again. Finally Hubby and I went there and talked with the owner's daughter (who was all of 21) who didn't like us asking questions in front of other customers so she told another employee to call Security. Well, we left but I did report them to the Better Bus Bureau. Finally the owner sent me my paperwork. And yes it was from the Hunte Corp!!!! It was such a mess. Did I tell you we almost lost Mia 3 times and that she had to be hospitalized for 3 days only 2 days after we got her? Did I say how much I hate Petland? :D I wish more people who lived here would picket that place with me. I'd love to have t-shirts made up and have a line of people in front of their stores!

I've tried researching where Petlands in Canada get their dogs from. Could it be from the same place? I'm sure it's a mill anyway, but would Hunte also ship dogs to other countries?

Oh how horrible! Can you please tell me more about The Hunte Corp.? I have been trying to get something done about pet stores and puppy mills and would love any info you have.
