Labs and Yorkies ?? We have a 9 lb and 5 lb yorkie at the moment and my hubby is really wanting to get a female yellow lab someday. Does anyone have any experience with getting a lab puppy that has yorkies? Would this be a good mix? If we do get a lab, we'd want to get one while our yorkies are still relatively young and playful and not when they're "seniors" which I know a new active puppy would then not be a good combination. Anyone have labs and yorkies? Thanks! :^) |
I have had Labs and Yorkies. Just do your research before getting a Lab. I would make sure the parents are very stable and of good, mello temperment. I love the yellows the best!! I would go to a dog show and meet some of the exhibitors and their dogs. You can go to infodog.com and find a show in your area. Or you can call one of the kennel clubs in your state and see who they recommend. Good luck in your search!! The only thing I worried about is that the Labs would step on and hurt one of the Yorkies. |

Like the previous poster said it is SO important to research the breeder and make sure they are being bred for a calm and even temperment. My aunt and uncle just got a lab puppy who was bred for temperment and she is wonderful! Here are pictures of Layla's day care friends! |
My lab lets my yorkie crawl all over her, she even lets my wife's maltese crawl all over her. Then again, it could be because she's a big chicken.:rolleyes: |
Ozzy's best girlfriend is a very submissive mellow yellow lab. SHe is so sweet and is only (!) around 60 pounds so she is small for a lab. I would try and make sure you get a submissive personality. |
My brother has a 4 year old lab...my yorkies love her. She is calm and very gentle with them. Now my neighbor got a lab puppy and so did my nephew. All three of mine hate the lab puppies. I mean really. They are both around 8 months now. I think it's the size and puppy behavior... |
My son has a yellow lab and a 3lb yorkie. Zoe the yorkie climbs all over Sadie, to the point Sadie has to jump up on the bed because she cant rest. |
We have a three year old male lab and a two year old golden/lab cross. And of course 5lb Ranger. He thinks he is a lab, but much smarter of course ;) Our big dogs let him do whatever he wants. I may worry about a lab puppy though- they are so clumsy and big! Have you considered adopting one that's past the real puppy stage? Both ours are rescues and are wonderful! Good luck!! |

I would definitely consider adopting a Lab out of his/her puppy stage if you already have yorkies. It's different when the Lab is already an adult or just coming into adulthood. ALL puppies are usually very playful and active and puppies just don't understand when another is too small for them to rough house you know? Unless someone on here has gotten a lab puppy introduced to a yorkie household. Eveyone I know and my own personal experience its the yorkie puppy being introduced into the Lab's home and they are just fine. But I know of several people who went and got a big breed puppy, tried to introduce it into their yorkie household and the yorkie ended up getting broken bones just from playing. |
