Please advise me on this! Pita is in her first heat, she's keeping herself nice and clean so that's not an issue. My question is, how swollen are her private parts supposed to get?! Hers is so big! Do you think it hurts them? I always think anything that swollen must hurt! She doesn't whimper or whine but she sleeps alot which i expected but is there a point where it is swollen too much? Could it be caused by her licking at it all the time? I have the diapers I could put on her but I always feel the dogs instinct knows best maybe I'm wrong! So many of you know these things... please advise!!! |
Angel were very swollen too. It looked like she had a small penis protruding. She got pregnant during her first heat so I don't know if its supposed to go back to normal after that or what. I do know that it hasn't gone back since she had babies. If I were to take a guess, I would assume it swells like that in preparation of insertion. So they can get "Stuck" together easier, which in turn pretty much guarantees a pregnancy. |
Well, I can see you two didn't get any answers but out of the other 40 odd people who read this thread, I bet they got a good laugh. No, it doesn't hurt them to swell so big and yes, it is normal. If you don't need the diaper, I wouldn't put it on her. Let her clean herself. Her twat will not go back to the size it was before she came in heat. Also, if you noticed her teats, they are bigger than they were before she came in heat and they also will not go back to their original size. After they have puppies their twats do not go back to original size either. The swelling is indeed so that the male may enter. Sorry you didn't get answered earlier. Usually the breeders would have caught your post. I haven't been on the net for two days but you have your answer now. I just read this thread for the first time. It is completely normal, and there is no such thing as a dumb Yorkie question. If you don't know, ask. Better to ask than to assume something is normal and find out that it was a sign of something terrible and then it is too late. Sometimes when Tiah is in heat she bleeds enough that I have to keep her in her crate more than I'd like for a few days. |
I havent had chloe go into heat yet but I have a boxer who has several times and her girly parts get HUGE!!!!!!!!!!! OMG its crazy how big it gets. |
Hey this may sound silly, but I have never had a female dog and will be getting my little girl in a week. How often do they go in heat, and how old are they when they go in the first time? :confused: |

The first heat depends on the breed. Yorkies mature VERY quickly. Their first heat is usually around 8 months. Again, every dog is an individual, and like women, it can happen at different ages. Sometimes it can be at 1.5 years. There are different stages to the heat cycle. 1 - Proestrus: the female attracts the males, has bloody vaginal discharge and swollen vulva and lasts about 9 days (she will NOT breed during this time). 2 - Estrus: femal will accept the male and is fertile. Ovulation usually occurs in the first 48 hours of this stage which again lasts about 9 days. 3 - Diestrus: Lasts 60-90. Reproductive tract is under the control of the hormone progesterone. This happens whether or not she is pregnant. 4 - Anestrus: No sexual activity takes place. Anestrus lasts between 3 and 4 months. |
