I almost lost Sophie.. never will i put another collar on my little baby's neck! but i do blame myself for being so absent minded and, well, stupid. it was only for an hour, at most, but i had to leave sophie at home because unfortnately there are places that don't allow my baby. In a hurry, i put her in the bathroom -- as usual, gave her water and some toys to keep her occupied. But little sophie had bigger plans, to try and chew on her collar. Well, when i got home, i heard screaming coming from the back bathroom. My mom (who had returned home before me, thank god) was in the bathroom with a pair of scissors, trying to cut the collar off. Apparently, sophie had the collar stuck in her mouth, and couldn't get it out. She was freaking out. I always correct sophie when i see her try to chew her collar, and usually i take the collar off before i leave her, but this particular day -- i was so rushed that i forgot to, and also forgot my purse with my drivers license. How unfortunate that the one time i forget, she decides to chew on it and nearly kill herself. there was a lot of blood on her face and paws, which later we found not to be associated with the collar incident, but rather her losing her puppy teeth, because today she had another of her episodes, where she starts pawing at her teeth, and i saw blood on her paws. So i was about to take her to the vet when she spit out her tooth. I was so relieved to see it was not something more serious. i feel like such a horrible person, and i keep thinking about it, and beating myself up over it. Everytime i look at her, i know she doesn't understand what happened, and i cry because i was careless and i almost caused that innocent puppy to lose her life. I am now a paranoid mother. I hate leaving her alone, when i do, all these horrible thoughts cross my mind. For the most part, though, she never leaves my side, but today i have to leave her to visit my brother in the hospital. so i am a little nervous.. anyway, i am sorry this turned out to be such a long post, but i felt such guilt, i had to let it off my chest. |
*hugs* I am SO sorry that this happened! I always leave the collar on my dogs when I leave the house&I've never thought twice about taking them off! Thanks to your story I will now always take their collars off when I'm not at home with them. -Amy |

Count your blessings, your baby is ok. Your baby is very fortunate to have a mommie that cares like you do. I guarantee you one thing...it won't happen again now will it? So....you're a good mommie. Go buy him some new toys..it will at least make you feel better! |
oh sweetie, I am so sorry that happened to your baby :( I am glad that your Mom came home and found her. I hope that she will be ok hugs |
i think all is fine. i bathed her immediately (this happened friday, by the way) to check for any cuts or scratches. then, i fed her some of her soft puppy food, and she ate it fine. so i think more than anything, she was scared. however she may have lost some brain cells due to lack of oxygen, or maybe she was already that ditzy :p ha. i'm kidding |

she also likes to tease her mommy by pottying right next to her pad, instead of on it -- but thats a different story ;) |
Your a wonderful mommy. Accidents can and do happen to anyone. If anyone want's to let their dogs wear collars, then make sure you can only put index and middle finger under the collar. Don't let it be really loose. ;) Hugs to your baby. |
I really sorry about your scare! I'm glad she is OK. They can hang themselves too. I always recommend a halter, never a collar. Much safer and better for their trachea. |
wow... this makes me nervous because Kash wears a collar all day while i'm gone, but nothing bad has ever happened. i don't think he even notices it's on him because he's never tried to bite it off or anything... but after reading this thread, it makes me wonder if i should only put it on him while i'm at home... the only reason he wears it is because it has a bell on it, and i need to be able to hear him (wherever he may be). when i first got him, i accidentally kicked him a couple of times while walking because i didn't know he was so close to my feet. so, i put a collar with a bell on him, and now i can hear if he's near me, and avoid stepping on him! lol. but i guess it's not a necessity if i'm not home. i know that just because nothing bad has happened so far, doesn't mean it won't in the future! so the collar is staying off while he's home alone. :) thanks for this thread and opening my eyes to my ignorance! |
I am so so sorry you had that scare. I am glad your Baby is ok.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: Quote:

This happened to me recently too with my little Ryder...scared me half to death! I'm glad your baby is ok now! |
So glad your little one was OK.:) This happend to me but I was in the house and Alfie was quite small at the time and he somehow got the collar stuck n his teeth and he was quite distraught!!! So I never leave a collar on ever if Iam not there and you wont do it again as you will never forget it , at least there was no harm done so dont beat yourself up about it. |
I am so glad Sophie will be ok. I am not a believer in collar's for decrative purposes on any puppy for this reason. It only takes a second for a little one to get into a situation where it can choke. Sophie was lucky. A lesson well learned I'm sure. Don't feel guilty, you did'nt do it deliberately. Hugs to Sophie and you, |
I'm ashamed to say this happened to Mika once too, and it was MY FAULT. I thought her mother had her collar too tight, and I lossened it which gave her enough room for it to get lodged in her mouth. |
OMG! I'm so sorry that happened. I'm so scared for my baby now because she's always chewing on her dog tags and I never take her collar off. I just tell her to stop when I see her. I'm going to take them off from now on and just let her wear it when she goes outside. I do walk her on a harness though and not by her collar. I'm glad your baby is doing ok. We have to be real careful with our babies. |
This happened to me but while she was on top of me sleeping. She was about 3.5 months at the time. She was sleeping and then she started fidgeting with the collar and all of a sudden it got stuck in her mouth and she was choking and couldnt breathe. She was completely freaking out and so was I!!! Luckily I got it off and she just jumpd on me and gave me kisses all over my face. and till this daywhen i out her collar on she DOES NOT fidget with it. I am so glad you found your baby in time!!!1 |

I'm glad she is alright. I am certain that all yorkie mom's have their own horror stories to tell. So, don't feel alone!:) |
Collars arn't for just decoration. Most want to have our babies safe just in case they get out somehow, so we put a tag with their name and phone number. How many people know of or read about a pet being found or lost and did not have a collar? I only use harness for walks but I think it's a good idea to have a collar to attach the ID to, but you should never have it lose enough that they can get their lower jaw between it and the throat. |
Thank goodness this didn't end in a tragedy! I'm so glad to hear she's okay! Hugs to you! |
I use the breakaway collar meant for cats but it is a good size for my dog as some cats are bigger than my dog. Does the breakaway collar help when this happens as in will it break off if it gets stuck in their mouth? I would prefer to have a collar and ID tag on Pao all the time if possible coz you never know one day if they happen to slip out because someone else didn't close the door properly and neighbours could identify him. |
