It is normal procedure to remove dewclaws? I was just wondering it if is normal or standard procedure to remove dewclaws from Yorkshire Terrier puppies? I noticed Britney and Brooklyn both have them on their front legs. I'm wondering if the groomer typically misses those when she trims their nails because they seem longer in length than their other nails; not dangerously long as to where they are hurting them- just longer. They are getting groomed this week so I'll be sure to point them out to the groomer. |
I wonder that too cause London has them on her back legs and the nail is growing long, she doesnt let me cut them. I want to ask the vet about this |
Yes it is typical to have the dew claws removed as a safety precaution. They can catch them on things and rip the nail out. |
I think most breeders remove them when they are little, like when they cut their tail. |
Baxter's weren't removed but our vet recommends it and is taking them off when he is neutered. |
Most are removed around day 4, when the tail is docked. its more of a safety issue. All my yorkies have them removed. I however did not remove one of my Chi's becasue she was born with a cleft pallet and too tiny to attemp it. She does fine with hers. She only has them on the front. I would just make sure you let your groomer know that they have their dew claws. I find they are harder to clip because of their location and position. |
I have never had a puppy with dew claws on the back but yes we remove them from the front. Sometimes they are so tiny, you might miss one or it might also grow back if not cut short enough. |
Thanks, everyone. I checked again and I don't think Britney has them, haha. Brooklyn definately has them though. I can't imagine having them removed now , but I'll definately make sure the groomer trims them. |
most breeders around here remove them.. pebbles doesnt have any though |
