Lesson learned the hard way We put locks on our cabinets way before we had kids. Our cat, Nub, can open them and I wanted to keep him out of the dishes and Tupperware. He still will go and open/close them but he can't get in them. Well, I put Guinness in the kitchen with a baby gate and we had an outing at my son's school. When I got home I found something shredded, when I looked closer I noticed it was raisin boxes! :eek::thumbdown I was SO freaked out, I called the vet immediately. He told me that the amount to worry about is more than 1oz per 2lbs of dog. I really think he got two of those 1oz boxes but to be safe I gave him some Hydrogen Peroxide to induce vomiting. I felt SOOOO bad but he did get out what he'd eaten and since then he's been fine. I contemplated on whether or not I'd post it because there's very passionate people here who may scold me about where I put my stuff. But I thought maybe there's someone else who uses these cabinet locks and think they are being good about it but it can still happen. And in an emergency type situation, you can use the Hydrogen Peroxide. I read the label because I'd never heard of doing this before and it was listed as one of the top uses. |
im sorry you had to go through this. no matter how careful we think were being sometimes accidents happen. dont beat yourself up about it, good thing you reacted quickly and your babys fine! when my beagle was a puppy she swallowed a ball of foil. she finally threw it up but it scared the heck out of me. |
Good thing you induced vomiting. As few as seven grapes have been linked to kidney problems in one dog. I would guess the dog was medium sized and it would take raisins but better to be safe than sorry. |

So glad he's ok! May I ask, how much peroxide did you give him?:confused: |
a tsp, not as much as the vet suggested. |
Don't beat yourself up about it!! One time when I had puppies, I went outside to water the plants, came back in about 5 minutes later and my momma dog had jumped up onto a chair and taken a plenty pack of gum out of my purse and took it back to her whelping box!! She and the pups proceeded to eat the whole pack, tin foil and all!! I couldn't believe it!! The vet said not to induce vomitting and to watch all of them and make sure they weren't lethargic. The next day they all had green gum poop!! And this was all in a matter of minutes with my purse up on a table!! They are little Houdinis!! |
These little guys are so mischievous and can get into anything, also it can happen so quickly. I'm so glad your baby is ok. :) |
Thank heavens your baby is ok. These guys are into eveything. My kids never put me threw what Bud has over the years.:p I keep my candy dish, with lid, up high so he can't get it. I am afraid he will knock it over when I'm not home and eat the chocolate inside:(. Better safe than sorry. I try and stay ahead of him at all times. You just gotta think like they do;) |

Re; the candy...one Christmas, my sister had a box of candy wrapped and under the tree~ while they were gone shopping or something, her pug got into it and ate almost the entire box:eek:. One trip to the vet coming right up:(. He was ok, but you can just never think of what they'll dream up when they're bored I guess! I'm so glad Guiness is ok~ good thinking about the H2O2! |
Thanks guys. I hate that he had to 'do' it for me to even think about it though :( |
I'm so glad your baby is ok! How scary! You can never be to safe with these little guys, there always finding ways to get into stuff! |
I'm so glad your lil one is ok & also glad you posted this here for others to learn from. Yes there are some very passionate animal loving people here, but I don't believe there's a single person on this forum who hasn't made a mistake with their furbabies. It happens, no matter how we try to keep our furbabies safe, accidents do happen. The best we can do is live and learn and to learn from others mishaps. |
scary!:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: |
