alpha? i keep hearing alpah yorkie or alpha mommy, what does that mean. |
you chewed it up?? OMG that's a bit to far for me? you make them find found on their own and with hold food from them? that's a bit harsh don't you think  |
kp 23-Im with you, I was reading benji's post and thought at first it was a joke. I'm not judging anyone benji, I was just taken aback by the withholdin food when they are puppies and then letting them fend for themselves. Also the chewing up of their food is a little much also. Maybe there are other ways you can make it known to them that you are the ALPHA dog in the family....but you dont have to actually ACT like one to do this. I mean if you think it has worked for you his far, then I guess keep doing it, but puppies need nourishment, especially little Yorkie puppies, so please do not withhold food from them, they can get hypoglycemia very quickly. Again I dont mean to sound like I am attacking you, I was just a little concerned for the puppies.... :o |

As for the alpha thing - it's like the head of the pack. the dog that is the boss. i read somewhere different ways to let your dog know you're in charge. i can't remember where but one thing it said to do was roll them over on their back and hold them firmly but be gentle (if that makes sense) and growl a little or look them in the eye. it's so they know that they can't tell you what to do. i don't know how much it works with the strong willed ones - mine still thinks she's the boss. |
kayaredee-Oh ok, well I feel much better knowing that!!! Some people will do anything for attention huh?? :) |

The rollover method is the best method -- kayaredee is right. You can also show you're boss by teaching them 'no' and just through everyday training like sit, down and stay. This teaches them that you are the rulemaker and they learn to trust your judgement if you gently enforce the rules. My non-yorkies got in a fight this a.m. over food and I seperated them and rolled over the aggressor and left the other one alone b/c she was just defending her treat. I looked the bad boy in the eyes and growled at him and talked in a stern voice until he looked away. Usually, after being reprimanded this way, they will come back a few minutes later and be all sweet and licky -- like thy're saying, "ok, I understand, I'm sorry." It's pretty funny. My yorkie was shy to begin with, not a leader type, but he sure wants a piece of everything that's going on and talks to us a lot about it. |
