Protect from summer heat...? Hey everyone So this is the first summer that my girls have ever experienced... and I needed some tips... Today has been the hottest day of the year (30 degrees celsius)...which is very hot for BC..... and the girls have been acting very weird We don't have A/C, but I had all the windows and doors open, which kept the house comfy. They have seemed lethargic... had only 2 hyper play-times which is much less than their full day play-times. Jaya just wants to sleep and she seems irritable. I've made sure there is always water around, and they've been guzzling it down like crazy.... Jenna refuses to sleep on anything but the tiled floor, and she doesnt have any desire to eat (which is shocking because she is an eater!) What can I do to make life easier for them because its only going to warmer... I really hope our whole summer doesnt turn out like today with the girls... Will they adjust? What can I do to help them? |
This will my first summer with my first Yorkie. But I used to keep ferrets and they overheat very easily, I used to have an electrical fan near their cage and spray them with cold water as often as I could. If they got really hot I would dip them in the sink! Maybe you could set a little pool/tub of water up for them! If not outside then somewhere indoors with a plastic sheet underneath! Hope this helps.:) Also I have a little clip-on battery fan I use on my baby's pram, if you have a crate this may be a good idea! |
I lived in BC, Canada for 2 years, and I know BC is not as hot like today (I am now in Seattle, so I know how hot today was (32 degree Celcius)!!!! I can imagine how hard it is for us as well as our furbutts! As for the cool tip, if you are at home, I heard that you can put your babies in a sink of cool water just touching their little bellies to cool them off. I also learned that from other yorkie mommies, when you are outdoor with your babies, take a spray bottle with you, spray their tummies with a bit of cool water to cool them down from time to time. |
thanks guys! those are great ideas!! I just keep wetting their tummies with cold water and see how that goes! |
I let my guys play with ice cubes outside when it's hot. They have lots of fun with them, and it keeps them from getting hot and dehydrated. You can also freeze gatorade for them. |
Furbabies in Florida I have noticed like to lay on cool tile or linoleum when it is hot out, especially on their tummies. My older Yorkie will always be found in the kitchen laying on the tile when it is hot, and in florida its hot alot |

Wow! It's hot here today in Cali also....we are at 95 degrees F. I remember freezing bottles of water for my rabbits in the heat. I would place the frozen water bottle in the cage & they would lay next to it to cool down. Perhaps something like that would work for our pups?....:) |

It roasted up here in North County. Poor Mia, we have no AC. The frozen water bottle is a great idea. I wet Mia down so she stays cool, and give her lots of ice cubes to keep her water ice cold. |

I'm making mine some of the pads that you can wet to keep them cool (didn't check the cooler bed link, but I suspect it's the same thing).....I'm making a couple to fit into their carriers and a bigger one for the house. We do have A/C but sometimes it still feels warm. Also, I just saw something pretty cool the other day....I have no idea who makes them; a friend bought one at the street fair here for $12...they're little personal misters..... looks similar to one of the battery operated toothbrushes, but the bottom part is sort of cylindrical and clear, and you fill it up with cold water. The top part has a sort of suction cup looking part (for lack of a better description) and when you push the little button, it emits a fine cool mist. I thought I"d get a couple of those for when we go out during the summer to use for the dogs. |
