New Baby coming home
 
Hello Everyone!

Im new and the one who owned a bird but not a yorkie. Well, we are bringing home a new baby in the first week of June. IT'S A BOY! We named him Mika (Meeka); it's the breeders name. From what we know Mika is a female name. The Breeder is a male and we liked the name so MIKA is it. We are nervous and excited at the same time. We are self employed so need to get him on our schedule. All the questions are coming up; wee-pad or outside training? etc.... I'm so nervous but we are excited to bring home our baby. He is so cute. He's a boy and at 9 weeks is 1.3 lbs. Does anyone have an idea how big he will get being 1.3 lbs at 9 weeks? All advice is welcome.

Hi, I'm from AZ too, and know this is an exciting time for you. We did both with Joey, I would taking him outside first thing in the morning, after breakfast, last thing at night and several other times, but I kept him in a pen with a pad. I like having the option to use both methods. This is one of the advantages of having a small dog. Some people think it's confusing for them, but yorkies are pretty smart. I actually think dogs prefer going outside, but in the middle of the night a pee pad is so convenient. I love the name Mika, from what I've read you get a better estimate at 12 weeks, but that's just an estimate too. Welcome to Yorkietalk!

My pup is Mika too! A girl Mika though. But there is a male singer here in the UK called Mika so when I say her name people assume she's a boy! Even though her collar,lead and harness are all pink!!! LOL!!! As for toilet training I am training my Mika to go outside, but when I'm not around she uses newspaper so I say do what is best for all of you, if that means both - do it! They are clever little things!!!:)

I know a lot of people who wee pad train their dogs, but I believe in potty outside. Here's some info on some different house training methods to help you decide what you want to do:
LDT House Training

My preferred method of house training is crate training, which keeps your pup and your home safe from chewing and other dangers.

I have met a lot of people (I'm a trainer/behaviorist) that started off with successful paper/pad training, and then the dog suddenly avoided the pad, and wound up using the whole house as it's personal potty.

I do suggest also keeping the pup on collar with the leash attached to your belt loop while he is not crated. This will allow you to have total control over the pup, and you will know when he needs to potty.
