water situation can yorkies swim? we're going to south fl next month and my aunt has a pool, well odie has never been in water except for taking baths and if he cant swim then ill buy him a life jacket thanks for your answers! =] |
My guess would be that it depends on the dog but I would definitely play it as safe as possible! That said, when Diggs was about 5 months I took him to meet another yorkie at a friends house. They were running around and chasing one another in the backyard. The older yorkie "Max" did a sprint towards the pool and made a sharp turn to avoid it- Diggs wasn't so lucky and SPLASH fell right in!! I almost had a heart attack and jumped in after him (in Louisiana in December!) but then he swam up to the surface and paddled all the way across the water to my brother who was on the other side of the pool. I had not yet taken him to water and he just knew what to do (thank god!). Enjoy your trip! |
I think playing it safe is the best idea. I would get him a life jacket just in case. You could try finding a place in your area that has swimming for dogs so he can try it out before you go. There are usually a few places that have dog swimming. I haven't taken my babies yet but want to. I think one would be scared and the other one would just love it. :D Try googling it and see if there is something in your area. :) |
I would get a floating alarm for the pool while you are there. If he falls into the water the alarm will go off and you can go and make sure he is o.k. I had one of my yorkies drown in a neighbors pool because he couldn't get up on the side of it, so I am probably more sensitive about the subject. It is better to be safe than sorry. |
Where in south florida are ya coming to? Born and raised (and still live in) in south Florida myself and my pup has been in the pool a couple of times now. I have a raft for her and she loves floating around and watching the humans do their thing. Shes swims a lil bit but soon afterwards i take her in for a bath since i feel that shes cold once she gets back on the raft all wet. but she seems to enjoy the water. she also has a blast running thru sprinklers....but hates baths.... go figure:rolleyes: i think it depends on the doggy really but all my dogs growing up loved going swimming (2 shih tzus, 1 GSD, 1 collie mix). |
Mine all swim. Reese loves the water....the river or the pool. We bought a scamper ramp for the pool...just in case. |

We took Maybelline for her first swim in our pool a couple weeks ago and she did just fine. She was 22 weeks yesterday. It has turned cool again so we have not been back in the pool. I think most dogs love it, but take it slow. |
I know from experience that yorkies can swim. We were at our home in florida last week. We live on the bay. Lola saw a heron resting on our bulkhead, went after the bird, it flew away and she took a swan dive off the bulkhead into the water. My husband was frantic as there are a few large alligators in the water! She went under, came up and started to paddle to the shore. My husband had wade in to get here cause she would not have been able to get up on the bulkhead. We hope she will never do that again, cause for sure an alligator will get her if she does!! water situation Always safety first. Got Tricksie at 10 weeks old and the first time I took her outside she jumped in the pool, I almost had a heart attack but she starting swimming like a pro, of course, I jumped in right away. She has never jumped in again, I never let her go out unless I am with her. |
I like the floating alarm idea. Sophie swam in about 3 feet of water for a little bit but tired quickly. Have fun and be safe :) |
