Wire Crate/ Kennel Training Suggestions Chewie has a little pet carrier that he never pays attention to. I've moved it around to multiple different places and he could care less about it. When I put him in it he just barks and yelps forever. I'm going back to work in 2mo. and I have to get him trained to stay in a crate. Do I need a bigger one so he doesnt feel so confined? I'm in the process of pee pad training him and I want to make this decision soon so I can train him to go on the pee pad in the crate. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Am I going about this the wrong way? What's the best method for training to prepare him for when no one is home for 2/3 of the day? |
Putting a pee pad in the crate is a bad idea - a crate should always be their den, their bed. They instinctively don't pee in their bed. If you get them comfortable going against their instinct, you will have a horrible time training. Since you will be gone most of the day, I'd suggest getting a play pen/exercise pen. Put his bed at one end and the pee pad at the other end. That way he will have more room to run around while you are not home. |
We live in a pretty small apartment with really no room for a pen. The only thing I can think of is using the baby gate to keep him in the kitchen. It's a long rectangular kitchen so he should have room for a pee pad and a bed. We've tried keeping him in there before but he just gets to the point where he sounds like someone is trying to kill him. I'm sure the neighbors arent going to appreciate that very much. Is there anyway I can help keep him quiet or is just having him used to the idea of being in there for a while about the only way? |
When we first got Rocco he hated his crate too. What kind do you have? We bought a wire crate so he can see us from all angles. I set up his crate with his bed a blanket. I put him in the crate at night next to my bed so he can see us. I used to have to put my fingers in there and pet him so he knew he was going to be okay, then he'd fall asleep. Then when I was home I still put him in his crate, while I cooked or cleaned. So he could get used to it being his little place. I gate off my kitchen with his crate, pee pad and food and some toys. I wouldn't confine him to a crate all day. At least in the kitchen he can walk around a little bit. It takes a little patience...Good luck!:p |
