My heart stopped yesterday Fortunately we were able to get my heart started again. My husband went out the front door to move his car into the driveway. I opened the door to yell something at him and Adie went running out toward the street at top speed. My husband was backing the car up and she was heading straight toward him. I called her and she stopped dead in her tracks, turned around and ran right to me. What a relief! You can imagine how glad I am that I trained her to come when called. I was so afraid that in her excitement she would ignore me or be slow to respond, but she was a good girl to be so obedient. I won't comment on her being bad for running out the door in the first place. Has anyone been successful at teaching their babies not to slip through the front door. I never take My dogs out that way without having a leash on them and I always carry the little ones out so none of them are used to going out that way! I thought that was going to help with issues like that and it has with Ivan and Cassie. HELP! |
OMG thank goodness she came back to you......:eek:Y ou must have got an awful fright. |
I would love to know how you trained her to come back to you. When I call Kayla she just ignores me and keeps going. I am sooooo afraid of ours getting out until I'm nearly paranoid. I had to take Mandy to the vet Monday and the other two always want to go. Tina was so upset until she bit me on the finger. I was running late and had to go on and when I got to the vet had to have a band-aid. I think we have 3 spoiled little heatherns. So glad your baby wasn't hurt. I would have had a heart attack too. |
Thank goodness you had a happy ending! Maxwell has been pretty good when I say STOP!!!!! But I haven't had to test it in a scary situation like yours. |
Jack used to try to run out the front door and I would have to grab him fast. Now if I say stay before I open the door he will not try and run out. Betty |
my heart would of stopped too. im glad she came running back to you. whew!! |
I know how it feels to have one dash out like that. My Azrael became deaf once when I opened the front door to get a box the UPS man left and she chased his truck down the street. That was the day the expen went up around the inside of the front door. Ya just never know........... |
Getting Joey neutered was the best thing in keeping him from running out the front door. Now I can open the door, and he doesn't even look tempted. Cesar recommends training with a leash on, and then opening the door and rewarding them for not going out. So glad your baby is ok. Quote:

Well hat's off to you Momma. Great job in training Adie to come to you. I read that one command could save your dog's life. Looks like they were right. Great job in training and what a good girl you are Adie for listening. |
Oh mine have run out the door more times than I can count. They really don't do it anymore though. I can imagine how much that scared you! YIKES! Glad that she is so well trained! Good Job! Sometimes when we can't solve the problem we can do something to prevent the worst case disaster and thats what you did by training her to come to you. :) :) |
1 Attachment(s) yes Jax and Jolie stay put with the front door opened . I knew I never wanted them to dart out like that bc I had one yorkie that would everytime the door was opened. So I trained them with treats and using the word WAIT ... it works pretty good .See pic .. |
I got lily to stop by using the water bottle, every time she would run out I would squirt her and say danger. It did not take long. |
Just reading that made my heart want to stop. I'm so glad she came back to you! |

Just like others have said....from the get go I have rewarded her for coming when I call. Skeeter (the new puppy) already has it down pat! He just loves to come running to you treat or not. Adie has never run out the door before and I think I got careless. THAT won't happen again. And thanks everyone for the compliments! |
Glad you hada happy ending. We don't use the front door much and usually the dogs are gated in the back of the house. I have never chased mine when playing I make them chase me. My pom is trained so she can be off leash and come when I callbut I worked with her every spring to retrain her. |
