When is it safe to take my dog to the dog park? Hi everyone. I was just wondering when it would be considered safe for Bear to go to the dog park? I want him to be socialized&I want him to love people&other dogs. Right now he is seven weeks old&the only shot he has is the parvo virus one. |
It is definitely not safe until your puppy has had all of it's shots. I'd say two weeks after the 4th set would be the absolute best time. |
the vet will let you know. he should at least have his first set of all of his shots. my vet made it clear when it was ok |
I agree, your vet will probably be able to tell you but the first set of shots is not sufficient waiting time. The reason why we give multiple sets of shots is to make sure the puppy actually gets immunity from them. The first couple of sets can still be counteracted by antibodies that the puppy got from the mother. |
I agree with the posters above, however I waited till Roxi was 6 months old... And even now at a whopping 2.9lbs she is still the smallest dog at the small dog park!! I have to watch her like a hawk, but she does pretty good!! |
After losing my dear Gizmo to another dog at the dog park, I would say your baby is never safe going to the dog park. You can't trust that the other dog owners are responsible and only bring their dog if s/he isn't aggressive. I would recommend finding a small dog meetup in your area. You could search meetup.com to see if there is one. If there isn't, I bet you could easily start one. I believe socialization is important.. but I've learned that the dog park is just not safe enough for our babies. |

puppy Mine love humans, BUT I do not care if they ever come in contact with another dog...in the last month I know 3 people who have had their Yorkies killed by other dogs during walks or at a park...mine stay home, in my arms or in a stroller...call me paranoid!!! |

Roxi has really gotten to know these other little dogs, and it's really nice... We have a great time, but as I said earlier, I still watch her like a HAWK, and she sits on my lap a lot of the time too, yorkies are more interested in people than they are the other dogs.. But we have a GREAT thing going at my local park!! It's important for them to be socialized... If you go on the regular, you will get to know other people and their dogs, and find your nitch!! |

omg, some one sold you a yorkie that is now only 7 weeks old.. oh my.. you need to protect that baby like that baby was your own born child..puppy needs three sets of shots.. and not just parvo..only after all three shots are given is puppy safe to be on strange ground what so ever.. If you ever saw a puppy getting parvo.. well I will not say.. but I had one.. and she was to have had all her shots.. from the breeders say so.. gave me papers.. well I got her mid december and by spring she has parvo.. she would never have survived if i had not scooped her up as soon as I saw her soft poop with blood in it.. drove three hours to a vet and she was there for a week.. at a cost of 1,200 for the week.. she survived and now has a weak stomach.. special food.. and I might add she was 6 months old when I got her and would never had dreamed the breeder did not give her her proper shots.. she was a show breeder to boot.. so please be careful.. I know it is hard but you need to keep that baby safe..anne |
