 A Yorkieshire Terrier History Lesson
4 Attachment(s) I was googling the history of the Yorkie breed tonight and stumbled upon an amazing webpage @ YTCA, written by Joan Gordon. It makes for a great read for all yorkie lovers: History of the Yorkshire Terrier by Joan Gordon
What I found most interesting is that the desire to have a "tiny" Yorkie isn’t a new fad, but one that was sought out in the early days. It was even said that dog shows would divide by weight class and gave examples, such as... "Less than 5 lbs; 6 lbs and under; 4 lbs and under; 5 lbs not exceeding 7lbs; 6 lbs and over; under 7 lbs; 7 lbs not exceeding 9 lbs, etc." Joan went on to say that larger Yorkies existed, but were not shown at shows. This absolutely surprises me, as I though quite the opposite.
Details about what breeds contributed to the Yorkshire Terrier and its popularity among the British were also noted. Joan Gordon also cites her sources...I think I may head to the library this week! Fun read and amazing photos!! :D |
