New Member - New Problem
 

I'm sure many of you have dealt with the problem of a greasy coat. Archie was bathed a week ago last Friday, and his coat is now very greasy. He has skin allergies and is on a special veterinarian diet containing simply duck and potato, and it has stopped the allergic reaction - itching/scratching/flaking skin. I hesitate to bathe him too often because of his sensitive skin.

On a lighter note, Archie came from Yorkie Rescue, Inc., and has become THE most beautiful dog! He was very weak and sickly, heart murmur, bad knees (of course) and what the vet first thought was sarcoptic mange. (It was really just massive ear infections and his skin condition.) He was so weak that he fell down two steps and broke a toe, spending 2 of his first weeks with us in a cast!

He's very smart, after only one obedience class. (At least, we think he is!) We live way out in the sticks, so he's actually able to run free, but comes when commanded. He's extremely muscular from lots of walks (runs!) on the beach, and he's just generally, all-around changed our lives.

As a REALTOR I'm able to do a lot of work from home, so he's seldom alone for long and has fit right into our patterns.

I'm mostly concerned about his coat, which is otherwise very beautiful. Maybe there's a wipe that would eliminate some of the excess oil...

Hi, just wanted to welcome you to Yorkietalk. Archie is very lucky to have found a person like you, he sounds like a wonderful dog. We have a grooming section that might give you better answers to the coat question. Most yorkies can take a once a week bath, but it's important to use a conditioner. Some people suggest that if you don't rinse really well the coat get dirty faster, but I think some dogs just are oilier. I've read about oatmeal-based shampoos that are good for sensitive skin. Post some pictures when you get a chance.

Hello and welcome to Yorkie Talk!! I've seen a lot of new members from MA lately. I am also from MA. I don't have any info on the greasy coat, but I am sure you will find answers from many others who might have suggestions. It is so nice to hear about another rescued Yorkie.

Coby's coat was greasy when he was younger. I tried several things but not much really helped. But he's sort of grown out of it apparently and isn't nearly the greasy boy he was. ;)

Welcome!!! My Pixie has a silky greasy coat and I have to watch what shampoo I use. Pet silk made her to greasy so I use Coat Handlers or Chris Christensen Day to Day.

I would recommend a really good oatmeal shampoo and the most important thing about the bath is the rinse. Rinse well past when you think the shampoo and conditioner are out. He could have greasy build up from shampoo residue.

I understand your hesitancy to bathe too often, but most good oatmeal shampoos and conditioners will tell you that you can use even more than once a week to get the skin condition under control. It's not really drying their skin out, but helping control it.
