Which Vaccines to Get? I've been doing a lot of reading on these forums about what shots to get&what shots I shouldn't get. Now I'm confused, lol. What shots should I NOT let my Yorkie get&which ones should I make him have? The only vaccine vets don't do here is rabies, because I live in Hawaii&Hawaii is a rabies free state, so they don't give dogs the rabies vaccine. Bear already has gotten a parovirus shot about a week ago&he seems fine. Thanks so much in advance! |
I was wondering this as well, I always wondered if Bordetella was ok Lily has gotten it but she seems to only react to this one. |
i am no help if your pup is still doing a series of puppy shots because Layla is done that. However we just went for our 2 year booster. Layla did not get the Lepto shot as it is not recommended in dogs under 11 lbs. Layla has had serious reactions in the past and i feel they are due to her getting Lepto (I was not as informed in the past) The vet has marked on her records that should she come in vomiting that the first thing they will test her for is Lepto. She also did't get her Bordetella combo vaccine (i think it also had somethign to to with a flu shot or something like that) because Layla has had the shot in the past and she has also had Bordetella so i felt that the shot wasn't needed since she's been vaccinated against it yet has caught it. The vet also marked that on her file and should she need to stay over for surgery or something she will be put in a private room since she has not been vaccinated (works for me!). it is so important to be informed on what vaccines you vet plans on giving and what you want your pup to get. She got her booster shot and her rabies which is law here but she will only need to get them every 3 years. |
I think it all depends on where you live and what is prevalent where. DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza) are all part of a combo. These shots should be given. Sometimes Lepto is included (DHLPP) and it should be used with discretion. It is not recommended for dogs under 10lbs. It causes the most reactions in Yorkies, ranging from mild to very severe and even death. Most people do not vaccinate for it because it only covers a few of the multiple strains of the virus and protection only lasts for 6 months. However, if you live in a high risk area, you might consider it. Sometimes the combo will also include Corona (DHLPP-C) and this should really never be given. It's unnessary. Giardia and Lyme's are optional and once again should only be used unless your dog is high risk. ___ Franklin gets DHPP, Rabies, Bordetella and Lepto when we need it (almost every grooming place in Oklahoma requires it). |

I forgot to mention that if you DO decide to give lepto, give it on a different day (maybe like a week later) so that if he does have a reaction, you'll know not to give it next time. These vaccinations require so much from their tiny bodies, I think it's best to space them out regardless. |
