Part yorkie/Part pig So...my little guy gained almost 2 pounds in 3 weeks...am I doing something wrong? At 11 weeks he weighed 4.8 pounds. Now at 14 weeks and 3 days he weighs 6.5 pounds. He already weighs more than his mom and dad. Don't worry...I am not complaining...I am glad he weighs a little more. With 2 boys 10 and under, my household is a little too rough for a tiny yorkie, I am afraid. I just don't want him to be unhealthy. |
Feel his sides at the rib cage, is there an indentation between the end of the rib cage and the beginning of the hips? If he is one long sausage, he is probably a little over weight. He is old enough to move to adult dog food which has a little less fat content. He may not like it as well, so may eat less. I hope you are using kibble (dry food), it is so much better for their teeth and mine don't gorge themselves on it like they might on wet food. Good luck |
We do use dry food, yes. But...I cannot leave food out for him. He will eat as long as there is food in his bowl. I have been very careful, even measuring out his food in the morning to the correct amount, and then feeding him 3 to 4 times a day out of that measured amount. I can feel his ribs. He actually looks thinner than when we first got him. He is a lot taller, but he does not have that fat little belly like he did. His belly poked out on both sides when I first got him, now it doesn't. |

I tried to post a picture but it says it is too big, and I have no idea how to re-size....We have a smaller rocking chair that my husband's pawpaw had made many, many years ago, and now Storm has took it over. He thinks it is all his now. If he goes missing for just a moment, I know he is in there sitting in his rocking chair...LOL |
Sounds like genetically he is just going to be a bigger dog. You are doing the right thing controlling is food intake. Also, some dogs get their full growth early and then just stop. My puppies grow like crazy until they are around 10 weeks, and then everything slows way down and they get their full growth by about 7 months. Other dogs keep growing longer. Its always a wait and see. Good luck. |
Of the puppies I saw in the liter, he was bigger, but his little cute face got me. One look at him and that was it. I knew he was the one for me! |
All Yorkies grow at a different rate. I wouldn't worry that you are doing something wrong, and you can't always tell their weight by the sire and dam. There could be bigger sizes somewhere down their lineage. Some will have a fast growth spurt and then just stop, and fill out a bit. Others will take up to 2 yrs to get to their full adult weight. If you can feel his ribs, but not excessively, then he is probably proper weight. But it is always good to check with your vet as well. |
"Yorkies Are Like A Box Of Chocolates, You Never Know What You're Going To Get" It is very difficult to determine their size according to their parents, some breeders tell you they should be no bigger than their dam & sire, but thats not always true... I experienced that with my baby :aimeeyorkGizmo, I purchased him as a tiny(teacup), both sire & dam were under 4 lbs, but not Gizmo... He weighs 11.2 lbs, he's beautiful, healthy, very independent, he was tiny until 5 mo old, then he didn't stop... Don't be discouraged, big or small, they're beautiful dogs... I have three, and I'll tell you my first, Nygee's dam was like 7 lbs or so, but :aimeeyorkNygee she's 6 lbs, and a :2pig::aimeeyorkporky yorkie, she's tiny, with tiny legs, and a hefty little body, according to her structure she should weigh 3-4 lbs, she's very dependant of me... She loves to be on our bed when we are home, but she can't get onto our bed without my help, as well as our couch, etc. Now, we have a third :aimeeyorkGypsy, she's a fireball, she weighs 4 lbs, and is tiny, with the advantage of longer legs... She is very independent as well, she climbs everywhere, there is no stopping her... No matter how big he gets, you will enjoy your little furball... :2hearts2:I love my 3 furbabies, :aimeeyorkNygee, :aimeeyorkGizmo & :aimeeyorkGypsy!:2hearts2: |
Oh, this is my first inside dog, and he has already changed my life! When I get ready for bed at night, he lays right at my head and stretches his neck across my neck, and I find myself thinking what did I ever do without him?! LOL!! |
Jackson gained weight quickly like that too, and then he just kinda stopped growing recently. He is 9 mos. old and 6 1/2 lbs. I'm not sure whether he will grow anymore or not. They all grow at different rates. Jake gained very slowly and stayed at 3 lbs. for the longest time. Then, right before he turned a year old, he went through a growth spurt and hit 4 1/2 lbs., and that's where he has stayed. |

Sound just like my Snickers. By the time he was 4 months old he was bigger than his parents (father was 5 pounds and mother was 6.8 lbs). He is now 1 year and is 10.5 lbs and has been that for the last couple of months. |
