For those with more than one When you leave the house do you leave them out together? If you use a crate or playpen do you put them together? Does it seem to mater if it is two girls or a girl and a boy? I am thinking of getting Lily a friend and want to know if they would be fine alone together for extended lengths of time. Probably a play pen situation I do not let Lily roam the house when I am gone because of her big brother. Of course this would be once the pup was older. I am so worried I am going to make the wrong decision :( to get a new puppy or to let Lily be the only child for 1 more year. |
I have 7, and have the luxury of taking one to work each day. I usually take the youngest every day until one year then I take turns. Right now, Gidget goes to work with me, Toby Tyler and Shilo are pinned in the kitchen, and the others have free roam of the house and out the dog door into garage to use pee pads. (I dont let anyone out in the yard unless Im with them. I have to keep Toby and Dakota separated because they get into it sometimes. (much better now that everyone is fixed) but I dont want to take any chances. Shilo and Toby are just a few days apart and have grown up together so they are like twins, they do everything together. |
I have 2 babies Peeka my boy and Daisy my girl. When i leave i put Daisy in a paly pen and Peeka in his kennel. I do it for saftey because you never know what they can get into when no one is around. I never leave them out alone when i am not there. Not so much as afraid to leave them together just afraid they may get into something they are not supposed to:) I love having 2 of them they love eachother and play. It's so much fun and i feel they have eachother now so they are not lonley:) |
I leave mine with free roam of the house along with my Chi Mix, Tinker... I never leave bedroom doors open... They are very good about using the pads if they cannot wait til someone gets home... My oldest daughter is in college so she has rotating hours, they are usually never alone more than 4 or 5 hours... when they were babies, I kept the all together, gated in the kitchen.... good luck with a new baby! d |
Deiter gets to stay out. Cozmo gets put in his x-pen. You can't trust him, he will poo where ever when ever, and if you are not watching he will just leave a trail of it for you. :D Dieter is very good out, unless he can see or get to YY then he will try and get them, lol He got caught. :D with the bag in his mouth. But that was my fault, I move the boys (pet) couch in front of the file cabinet and forgot to move it back. Bad Mommy. lol |
Mine are 3 so I leave them together but I would never leave a pup with an older dog |
I leave Gracie free and Sugar and Spike (both boys) get babygated in the study. Spike has accidents sometimes when he's alone and Sugar gets throw rugs confused with his potty pad. Gracie is the my good girl so she gets freedom. |
I have 3 and used to leave them all together in an x-pen until Hoku went into heat and drove the boys bonkers. Now they each have their own crate:) |
Brooklyn and Britney have free run. |
I have 2 boys and they are both gated into my kitchen together. I do not yet trust them in the house alone... but they do well together. I could not imagine seperating them! Actually they dont want to be seperated, they walk side by side on leashes, they want to both be held by the same person, they look for each other when they roam too far and come right back together... its very cute! I couldn't seperate them! :) |

Magic and Sailor have free run of the living room and kitchen and are fine together...the only time I separate them is if they get into one morning or something. They have stayed out together since we got them. Captain has his own XPen that he stay in b/c he will mark during the day if out and Heaven has her own XPent that she stays in b/c she will potty in the house as well. This works great for us and gives everyone time to be alone and rest. It also makes it so I don't have to worry about what they are doing while I am at work. Sometimes I come home to messes, but I just clean it up and move on...they can't always hold it!! |
I have two, and they both have free run. However, when Jackson was still a pup, we didn't leave the two alone together until he was older. Fortunately, mine aren't left alone that much. |
I have two girls. Molly is almost 6 mos. and Lexie is 16 mos. When no one is home, they are closed in my room, which is really their room now. My room is on the second floor, but it has a balcony, which is enclosed. So they have a doggie door leading to the balcony where their potty pads are. So half the balcony is the potty area and the other half, they use for sunbathing (hehehe). I love having the two. I wanted to get another, but I think it would be too difficult when we travel (shucks). Good luck. |
Thank you all for your input, it is much appreciated. |
All 5 of mine are together in a back office with weewee pads. They have a big bed in front of the French Door, getting sun. |
Do you ever worry about them fighting? |
My two have free run of our bedroom when we're not home. I was worried about them fighting so one day, I set my camera up and video'd them while we were gone. They played for the first 10 minutes and then slept the rest of the time! |

I gate all 3 of them in the kitchen together. I get comfort when I am gone knowing they are together. Even though two of them fight when I am there, they are fine when we are gone. Cant trust any of them to roam the house...they all have problems with peeing and pooing even though none of them still should. |
Run of the House! I have 3, 1 male Artie, the Father, he's 4 yrs. old and 2 females, Abigail is the Mother and she's 3 yrs. old, Tiffany Aloha is their daughter she's almost 2 yrs. old. All 3 of them have full run of my House. I am usually with them most of the time except when I go to work-partime @ night, 3 times a week. At one time I had 5, 3 of them being Puppies I crated all 3 of them b/c I did'nt trust them and I felt better knowing that they were safe and locked up. I have always left Artie & Abigail out, and crated Tiffany until she was fully Trained. I don't worry about them when I am gone b/c I know they are well behaved and Trained as well as Socialized. They are a Family so they never fight in any way.....they never have since they all get along with each other. Luckily they were never destructive, except for their "Teething Phase". They do have alot of "Private Places", a couple of cubbie holes or caves? I still have their crates out and open for them to use, but they are never locked in there. I do beleive in Crate Training, but I don't believe a Dog should spend alot of time in one. I have a really good relationship with all 3 of them seperately as well as together as a Pack. |

Kaysi and my bigger dogs have the run of my studio but Cody stays in his pen that I built. He's very tiny so I don't want to risk him getting hurt while I'm gone. |
Since I am a stay at home Mom I get to be with my babies everyday all day unless I need to run and errand or two. When I do leave them I let Cricket have free run of the house...she is such a good girl...no accidents ever!:) Now Paxton....he is my little stinker! I put him in his crate for his own safety and to help with his potty training. ;) He is an excellent little hiker! |
Since the puppies, everyone gets crated. Jersey and Bizzy together, Ruby with her puppies and Coco with her puppies. They all use the dog door, but they drag in SO much stuff. Twigs, leaves, little pieces of bark. Also it is just safer to crate them. You'll be able to tell whether they can be left alone together. Even if their crates are right by each other, it will provide some company for them. Err on the side of safety. |
The Yorkies are in a playpen when we go out and the cat usually supervises them ! Kandi , the cocker is in her room usually sleeping in her kennel . Kandi can't be left out as she has been known to get into cupboards and eat whatever she can ......... and " the boys " don't need to be taught any more " bad " habits ! |
Dennis was a 1 ½ when I got Sahara. Dennis spent the first 6 months or so in the safe room (Bathroom) when I went shopping but always had the run of the house when I was here. When sahara arrived she had the safe room till such time as I was convinced she would be safe with Dennis, stairs, wires, and such which took about 9 months. I now leave them both together and they sit in the window till I come back. Yorkies are funny they won’t even eat till I get back. I love them both, however I would have rather just had 1 at a time because it is impossible to take two anywhere and just walking them is difficult, as they want to go in different directions not to mention I worry about keeping them both safe. So good luck with your decision. |
I have two and they both share a crate. They each have their own but prefer to stay together!!!:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
