Usually breeders will supply puppy papers that you fill out and send in. Then you get your AKC registration paperwork (pedigree and certificate). I don't know if you can register a dog without the breeder/former owner's paperwork... Here's the info on the akc site: http://www.akc.org/reg/registeradog.cfm |
sorry to say i think you might have gotten screwed. most breeders will have the papers when you get your puppy if not its usually within a matter of days to a week before you should get them. I dont think there is really anything you can do maybe someone here will be able to help more |
you need to call your breeder and give them a time limitation! Did you have a contract and did it state that you were buying an AKC pup with papers? did your contract state they would send akc papers upon receive a spay/neuter proof from you and your vet? Did you buy on full registration or limited registration?... If it was simply a 6 month time limit I would nicely write them a letter and certify mail it. Reminding them of your agreement that the 6 months have expired, I would state they have 14 days to produce the AKC papers as promised or you will have no choice as to take legal action. hope this helps |
99% chance you got screwed.....sorry. There are times that the paper work gets delayed. However, there is noooooo excuse not to answer or return your calls. That is the red flag here. I was in the exact same situation with my first male Yorkie. The woman even changed her number. I got it from information and she had the nerve to say "How did you get my new number?!?". Then she got an unlisted number. What a hassle for her (and me!!). She should have just told me he wouldn't be coming with papers and it would have been my decision to purchase him or not. |
I agree. It has been 1 year and 5 months.SO i guess that i am SOL.I just thought that maybe there was a way that i could still get the papers. All he gave me was a paper with his name, address phone number, how much i paid and that he was to be AKC(as soon as he got the papers)i called him many times and got the answering machine. He would not call me back. When i did get ahold of him he said that the AKC place losted his papers and had to mail out new ones(ya right)never heard from him again. after 6 months, I'd contact a lawyer and find out what my choices are. this breeder has screwed you out of your papers...and I've seen it happen before. send him a certified letter...one that he has to sign for...requesting the papers again. this will show proof that you are wanting the papers. best of luck and keep us updated. |
Write, call or email the AKC...address on the web site. Make a complaint. Tell them everything the breeder said and you are waiting for papers. When a breeder is in good standing with the AKC and parents are registerible, it is very fast and easy to get papers. They usually contact the breeder or even inspect records if you make enough noise. You can go to small claims court...show the difference in the price of a pup with and without papers. May do not do much good, but none of this cost you more then a few dollars and the breeder might get think twice about ripping people off next time..and you might get some satsifaction. |
