X-Pen or Crate??? Please Help.
 
Does anyone have any suggestions. Roscoe is 10 weeks and sleeps fine in his crate but during the day when he has to be in it he crys constantly. He is still being potty trained, and I've heard different suggestions about both........any help would be great.

how long is he left in the crate during the day? i normally just use the crate and make sure i come home at lunch to let them out...when i first get them i let them out when i wake up, during lunch, after work, after dinner and before bed.

then as they get a little older it is when i wake up, after work and before bedtime...

I choose an X-Pen because of how long he is in it each day. Being in a crate for that long would probably be cruel.

he's in the crate for about 4 hours then I come home during lunch and take him to the bathroom play for a little and then take put him back in. About 2-3hours later my GF comes home for lunch takes him out to potty then puts him back in the crate.........then I come home after work about 4hrs later. The problem is that he continually has accidents and doesn't always potty when outside and he cries terrible when we leave.

a lot of people thinks that crate training is cruel...but in my opinion it is the most effective...i mean i do let them out while i am at home to play...and i also have a xpen setup for them to play while ii am supervising...but until they are fully train i will not give them much room to run around...i slowly open up the area but only little by little

if you are going to use the xpen then you will have to lay down peepads...and train him to use pee pads...

since the weather is getting nice i rather them go outside...

what you need to do is keep the time consistent...put on a feeding schedule...my dogs knows when is bathroom time...because it is the same everyday...its like you out them on a schedule...and after some time they will get the idea

I like an xpen for pad training and a crate for outside potty training

He does, but we have puppy pads for him. So that way at least he's trained to go on those. Being gone for work all day, putting him in a crate would mean I couldn't really use a pad and there'd be no room for running.

Oh, I know what you mean. I just mean if I'm gone for the workday for like 10 hours or something, I don't want him in a crate the whole time. I just want to give him room to move.

well the crate that i use is big enough for him to stand, lay down, turn around and move around. but not big enough for him to use the restroom in it...most dogs won't go where they sleep...

i come home for lunch to let him/her out..when they are puppies they sleep most of the time...

My Roxy is in the pen until my husband gets home from work (which is almost always before me). She is in her crate only at night for sleeping. In the pen, I put tons of toys, a bed and pee pads just in case she has to go. Oh and I leave a little bit of food and water.

I use a playpen because I don't return home until 5:30pm.

we used an xpen until Benji started climbing out of it. So now he is crate trained. I don't really think it matters. Whatever you think will be fine.
