what to use in case of big dog attack hi, i am not sure if this is the right place to ask, but after reading about dior, who was just recently killed in nyc, i am pretty upset about these pit bulls and large dogs. we walk sammy in alley pond park, queens, ny and just recently some cops were driving around asking if we saw a pit bull running through the woods. i was in a complete panic attack, so scared that i carried sammy all the way back to the car. what can i buy that i could god forbid use on a pit bull, that i would not hurt sammy if we were attacked. could i buy pepper spray, mace or ? it has to be strong enough to make a big large dog run away. i jusy want to feel safe walking there. |
Good question! I know there is dog mace but I don't know where you could buy it. Maybe someone else will be able to answer your question? |
Whenever I take the dogs on a walk I take pepper spray there are way too many strays |
You can get pepper spray or mace at an Academy if they are in your area. If not ask a security guard or a cop, they can tell you where to find some. |
Mace for dogs is called Muzzle. You can buy it online. Just Google it and you'll get tons of hits. Dog Repellent Pepper Spray - Mace Muzzle |

I always carry pepper spray when we go walking. I had never thought to use it for larger dogs, just on people cause I'm scared that my furbutts might get dognapped or something. So I guess there's another reason to carry the pepper spray with me! I bought mines at Fry's electronics. |
that is a very good question...i hope you find a good answer... |
Citronella spray is safer than pepper spray because it doesn't make the dog mad. I sell it on my website but I'm out of stock. Now that it's summer again (yeah!!) I will restock! |
Great thread! I've been wondering the same thing! I'm very intimidated by BIG dogs because I barely am pushing 5'2" and I worry that even if I was holding one of my babies a big dog could still grab them from me! |

It stings like crazy, but does no permanent damage. Even if Sammy got some in his eyes, it could save his life. It's got a very directed stream, though, so it's unlikely you'd hit Sammy. |
I say carry a very big pocket knife! |
2 Attachment(s) These work well but you can't openly carry one of them in most places. :D If I knew I was going to be in a place that I chance of running into an aggressive dog, I'd carry pepper spray meant for bears. |
my first thought was a bat too.. |
I had a problem with a neighbors German Shepherd (she let it run around off its leash and it would rush up to me and my Yorkie -- I would have to hold my dog over my head until she got it under control). I contacted an Animal Control Officer. She said they don't use Mace or Pepper spray because on big dogs it sometimes doesn't work and just makes them mad. They use bear repellant (like you would take camping). It won't hurt the dog, but is much stronger. I looked for it at REI and Sport Authority though, but I never found any. |
