I want another puppy but need some opions, please... OK, I want to get another puppy and have had my heart set on another female(I even have a name picked out for her). Anyway now I'm also considering a male. Now where ya'll come in. I need the pros. and cons of 2 females, and the pros. and cons of female and male. Which would you get. Right now I'm leaning toward another female, but then I keep hearing how males are so much more lovable. HELP, me decide... |

Yoda says males are the best! Kidding, kidding, all Yorkies are adorable! :) Well, if you get one male and one female, they may want to mate, which may be a problem, and I have heard the male still wants to mate even if fixed. But they are different from females, so if you want a taste of a Yorkie boy's love for you... ;) |

And they might be able to share clothes :cool: Although I have heard the boys are little loverbugs, I think it *really* just depends on the individual puppy. Either way, your new addition will be happy having a buddy like Lexi! |

Well since I have a male and female I would say get a male. Yes Mac is quite the little lover boy. He definately loves to cuddle with me more than Mellie. Either way male or female they will be one lucky pup with you as a mom. Since Mac has been "fixed" I must say he finally stopped humping Mellie 24/7. |
I own a male and a female ... but not a male Yorkie. I have a female Yorkie and a male MALTESE and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the combo! My boy is SOOOO affectionate and loving. I'm sure whatever you decide to do will be wonderful. Yorkies and Maltese are my 2 favorite breeds. So good luck!! :D |
I have heard from other yorkie mums whom have lived with both males and females...that males are more protective and are always following (usually the adult female of the house) their mom around the house. Even if you just go tot he bathroom they want to follow you to make sure you are okay. they will always sleep with one eye open (not literally;) to make sure they know where you are at all times. Whereas females don't follow when they don't want to. Females are more cuddley but I this what I have heard and soon I will know the differences. Also ever dog has its own personality and their is ALWAYS an exception to the rule. tina |

males I have a maltese female, yorkie female and a yorkie male. The male's personality is definately different than a female. It's nice to experience both. One thing to consider though - if you're going to leave his hair long, he will always be peeing on it. It really grosses me out when I pick him up and his hair is wet. The hair smells like urine. He needs a bath more often. I like mine to have long hair. To me that's what a yorkie IS. JMO. :D |
I have a male yorkie, and both my aunt and cousin have females, they both always say how my Miko is so much sweeter and cuddly then there females, I've noticed it too, females tend to be a little "hormonal" in my opinion. I am also thinking about getting a female to keep my Little man company but I'm not sure that I am going to like the girls personality. |
I will probably be getting another female, I want my yorkies to have long hair and my goofball husband thinks that males need to keep a puppy cut(so we would argue). I also want to say to whoever it was that said it just depend on the dog, I have to totally agree. Even though I have heard time and time again that males are much more lovable. I have to say that Lexi is the sweetest puppy I have ever had(she is not my first yorkie let alone dog). She also follows me everywhere, and has to be right by my side for everything. When I'm on the computer she sits right here on my desk. She loves to cuddle with me and loves nothing more than being kissed(OK maybe being told she is the prettiest baby in the world :rolleyes:). My first yorkie was very lovable too and the best personality, and my rott was the most lovable and cuddliest dog ever, and Lexi is the sweetest and cutest.(all females and all different) |
I had two females for a year before I got my male and for us there were absolutely no cons. We got to dress them up like twins and if we left they got to keep each other company. Other than the obvious expense of having two pups there was no downside. When we got our male for breeding we worried about how he would fit into the family and the obvious problem with him marking everywhere. But even that wasn't a problem when I discovered the belly band. In short its all worked out just perfectly. In fact we're even considering adding one more in the future. As far as boys being more lovable than girls I dissagree. I see no difference, they each want a lap to sit on and a face to kiss. I realize I have listed no cons...lol...but in my humble opinion I see none. Best of luck no matter what you decide. |
I don't know if anyone has gone through this, but my Little one loves my husband more than me! I can't spoil him enough, and my husband who didn't want a dog to begin with, and doesn't care about him nearly as much as I do, Miko tends to follow him more around the house and stuff. He does play with him throwing him toys back and forth, and I think playing a little to rough with him actually! but, I love him more!! Can anyone relate? |
We have 2 females and they are wonderful. They play together, sleep, eat and bark. No problems at all. No. 2 is much more affectionate than no. 1 and loves to cuddle. Could be personality or rank in our family - I can't tell... |
I have 2 girls and they are ABSOLUTE lovebugs, they follow me EVERYWHERE i go, they love to be cuddled and kissed and babied with, they are always together and make a perfect team! Ive had yorkies before including a male, he was precious DONT get me wrong and much of a baby, but he lived in his own little world, did what HE wanted to do and came for loves and kisses when he felt like it, he was a lot of fun to watch tho and very beautiful ;) |
My vet told me if I get another puppy/dog I should get a female so that there are not 2 males trying for the same territory.....so I think the female/male combo is good BUT you can look at awesome pairs like our very own Chanel and Cheri and how well they get along!!! Maybe bring Lexi with you and see how she reacts with the other puppies?? |

It is not uncommon for two same/sex yorkies to fight. So if you get a second female to love, just be prepared that the possibility exists. My Chattie and Chizzie loved each other and played and slept together until Chizzie reached maturity and then the fighting began. The frequency and seriousness of the fighting is getting worse, so I am seriously considering parting with Chizzie. Chattie is my heart, Chizzie is my laughter, faced with this hard choice, I must keep my heart and share my laughter. |

Hi Tricia! I went through the exact same dilemna before I got Emmy. I think it all depends on Lexie's personality. Is she dominant or jealous when other dogs are around are is she more of a submissive sweeter personality? Mia has always been submissive and ultra friendly toward other dogs, so another female worked well with her. However my mom's yorkie Peaches is very "bossy" and dominant and would probably not do well with another female, however does well with their male king charles spaniel because boys tend to be really sweet and let the girl push them around. Having Emmy has made Mia more assertive ;) but they compliment one another so it works. Hope that helps! |

Lexie will be so excited to get sister or brother. As far as boy vs girl, it would be a hard decison for me to make. I have two females and one male and they all have such different personalities. When I got each of mine I just went to look for a yorkie and was lucky they had both and picked the one I liked the best. I didn't matter the sex to me as long as they were heathly. You can't go wrong with either. |
