newbie to yt and to my yorkie Hi everyone. I am so glad I found this website. I have a question. I just got a yorkie who is 3 years old. The family that had him before kept him outside and I think was neglected. He has joined our family and seems to be doing great with his new environment. He is very good tempered and loves to play and be with us. We have started to house train him and he is learning fast. My question is about his coat. He has a very short coat and he is already three years old. I was just wondering if there is anything I can do to help it out. Do you think that him being outside had anything to with it? I hope there is something I can do. Thanks in advance. |
Im sure Hi first of all good on you for taking in that baby. that poor precious dog outside makes me so angry and Im sure thats why his coat will be like that.but im no expert just a new yorkie mum myself.Good luck to you and your baby is very lucky. :) dianne :) |
A lot of his coat may be due to genetics, but there is oil supplements that you can use to put in his food to help his coat, as well as use shampoo and conditioner that is for shinier coats. Welcome to YorkieTalk, we look forward to seeing pictures of your Yorkie. If it's short now, let it grow out some and then see how it is. What is his name? |
Welcome to YT! Well, you might want to start your baby on some good food. I've heard and have started feeding mine a dog food that contains the Omega Fatty 3 Acid. It is suppose to help with their coat and skin. All of the breeders in my town have highly recommended it so we'll see how it goes. You will want to also get some good shampoos and conditions. The Chris Christensen products are recommended on this site. I can't get to the website so I haven't been able to get it. :( Hope that this helps! Would love to see picts of your new baby! |
The website for Chris Christensen products is www.chrissystems.com . I agree with everything that's been said. I just wanted to welcome you to YT and tell you that I can't wait to see pics of your beautiful baby! Taking in a neglected dog is such a wonderful thing to do! |
Welcome to YT its nice to have u with us, good on u for taking this baby, i agree on all the above posts u got great advice, the only thing i can add is give that baby a LOT of TLC, its probably starving for some loving ;) |
if he's in poor health or has been neglected you want to start from the inside out to help get his skin and coat healthy. You might want to give him Missing Link. on the outside ~ Chrissy system is great. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk and congratulations for your 3 years old Yorkie . Last week I adopted a 2 Years old girl and a few months ago , I adopted a 1 year old girl . Coat grow is mostly genetic . My first Yorkie named Maļa never grew a coat . She always looked like an Australian Terrier even if her sire have had a floor lenght coat and her dam had a medium lenght one . No matter how his coat is , the most important for your little one is to feel the love and appreciate . Do you have a picture of him ? |
Hi and welcome! There are vitamin supplements you can get from your vet and that might help with the growth a little bit. Let us see your baby! |
Hi and welcome from me too, I'm new also but already getting addicted to this site! :) I have a 5 year old rescue Yorkie who also had lived in bad conditions, her skin was all thin with no elastacity to it and her coat was thin and bald in places so the vet advised a balanced diet, a few drops of olive oil on her food and Vitamin E cream rubbed on her skin. I'm sure your lucky baby will be fine now she has you to love her. |
New Memeber of my Family Help! I was just giving a yorkie a couple of days ago. His name is Baby (I'll post pictures as soon as I figure out how) and he is 2 years old. The previous owner told me they only fed him 1 1/2 cans of Caesar food a day, is this enough? Also, can anyone recommend something to keep him smelling fresh while he is in between groomings. I was also told that its ok to leave him in the house during the day while I am at work. I tried it today, I left the TV and the AC on but I got to nervous and sent my boyfriend to pick him up. Will he be ok in the house alone because I really cant afford to send him to a sitter? |
I am fuming sitting here reading that the previous owners left that little one outside!!! Who would do that to a tiny dog like that! I am so glad that you managed to get him and bring him into your home. I'm sure he will adjust fine to all the new and much better care you are going to give him. |
Welcome to YT! I think the cure for anything is good food and lots of love - and it sounds like he'll be getting that from you! Also use a good shampoo and conditioner. Good luck and congrats! :p |
thanks everyone for all the support and encouragement. We are loving having Ozzy in our family. I'm trying to do my best to keep him healthy and happy. |
I'm so glad this baby ended up being with a loving person such as yourself. My male Shiloh was 1 when we got him and although he wasn't left outside he did not enjoy human contact. Before I picked him up the breeder shaved him. We have had him almost 2 months now and his hair is growing back nicely. I also agree with everything thats been said here. Love does wonders. |
