Need YTer's Expert Advice
 

Well, I have received some wonderful advice from YTers about my other post, where I was looking for a little puppy. I actually attended a dog show here in Guadalajara yesterday. I spoke with a breeder and she had a little female available. I'm just not sure about going through with it. She was very caring about some puppies she had with her at the show. I had asked if I could see them closer and she asked me if I had touched other dogs before around the arena, so I wouldn't risk getting the puppie sick. I haven't seen the little female she has in person, but I would like to do that. The puppy she is selling comes up to date on shots and is registered with the Federacion Canofila de Mexico (the Mexican registry). She's asking $15,000 pesos, or about $1,450 or so dollars for the puppy. She should mature to about 4 pounds. Is this too much? I don't know if I can get perhaps a better quality puppy in the States for less. So that is why I need the advice of the experts here on YT. You guys are so amazing, so I trust your opinions. Well, here are the pictures of the puppy and her father. The breeder didn't have pictures of the mother, but I would like to see her in person before. Especially since I emailed someone else about their puppies and they send me the same picture of this breeder's sire. So if anything, I want to check. Thanks again.

are you planning on breeding or showing? If no for both answers, then I would not pay that. thats my opinion.

Nope, no plans to breed or show. Maybe in the future...like 50 years in the future...LOL! :) It does seem like a lot of money to me. But whenever I try looking in California, that seems like the going rate. Other show breeders I contacted in Mexico are all in the $2000 range. One of them even told me that my budget, of $1000 or so, was not enough for a well bred Yorkie and that I should instead save my money for another breed. :( This puppy is cute, but she's being sold at 8 weeks, while the other breeders I spoke with said they sold them until 12 weeks. I don't know if I should wait... switch breeds and instead find something else. I guess I can wait a bit more.

I honestly think the prices for yorkies is outrageous!
I know you can get healthy yorkies from good breeders for under $1000! I know that for a fact!
You are just going to have to drive the distance to get one!

How far is this distance? :) I have certain qualities that I'm looking for in a puppy. I don't want a little 2 pound one...I saw some of those size at the dog show yesterday and I freaked out at how tiny and fragile they look. It scared me! :D Something maybe in the 3-4 pound range or so would be nice. I would love to find something in the $1000 range. I've been looking in my local paper, but no luck.

Update: apparently, there was a mistake when I contacted another breeder who sent me the same picture of their stud dog. Somehow, they got mixed up and the breeder of the puppy who's picture I posted above, is the owner of the dog. She send me another picture. I might go and look at the puppy, but I guess I can decide then. But any other opinions? Thanks again!

I see no problem paying $2000-$3000 for a pet quality Yorkie as long as the parents are health screened. Yorkies are soooo expensive to breed. If it is a healthy line and you trust the breeder, that is not a bad price.:)

Now I don't think Yorkies should cost that much but because of vet bills and all of that, they do and I don't see it changing in the near future.

i do think the price is fair. If you go over into California to purchase, you are likely to pay twice that much or more. I have flow my babies to California because the prices there are so high and they can fly my babie along with a ticket for me to escort cheaper than they can buy there. Also, if you look into other states, you will have to pay a shipping fee so that makes the price as broad as it is long. If you see her and like her, I would buy her. Yes, there are cheaper dogs around if you want to ship from far away and take a chance on what you are getting. You might get lucky and find a nice quality dop for 500-600 dollars. Some people on here have gotten lucky like that.

I think the price is very fair for a healthy Yorkie pup. I have found that raising a healthy pup is an expensive process both in time and money. If I were going to buy a pup, the first item on my list would be to do all I could to assure that the pup was healthy - including talking to the breeder's vet. I would also want to see both dam and sire as well as the pup before making a committment.

In Ontario Canada... it is hard to found a quality/healthy Yorkshire for less than $1000 and that even without papers.

It is strongly recommended to go see the puppy and the parents before buying if possible...
