How to brush back teeth? To those who brush their yorkies' teeth: How do you get the teeth on the sides in the back (towards the throat)? |
haha good question! I struggle to pry her mouth open.. once I do.. I use the smaller end of the toothbrush (it's a two-sided one we got at the Petsmart clinic).. I still have issues.. so I spray her with petzlife.. but I want to take her (Kayah) to get her teeth professionally cleaned).. Evie I will takke once all her teeth come in... But I'm really looking foward to some tips everyone has:D |
First I wear a rubber glove (left hand only, I use right hand to brush) to protect myself and it helps when they try to close their mouth. Then once I successfully open their mouths, I keep my thumb and index finger open to keep their mouths open (index finger keeping upper jaw open while thumb keeping lower jaw open), then I use the toothbrush to brush. It takes a little practice and patience, sometimes they don't like to keep their mouths open wide enough for you, and that's the gloves come into play, when I apply pressure to keep their mouths open, it avoids their teeth directly 'bite' into my fingers/hand. |
It's very funny that you started this thread. I've almost started the same one a couple times over the last week. Eddie is very cooperative with toothbrushing, but I'm never sure if I'm brushing well enough. I use a finger brush and try to brush up and down all the way back. But it's difficult because my fingers are roughly the size of small logs. It's good to read what others do. Maybe a toothbrush would be easier. Problem is, he prefers my fingers. |
I don't use a toothbrush at all - not even a finger one. Instead, I wrap a piece of gauze around my index finger and use that. It is very easy to get to all the teeth - even the back ones and you can make sure you "brush" both the front and back of the tooth as well as the very back part. Try it, the pups are usually much more cooperative with this method as well. |
Thanks for the suggestions! I've been using a q-tip which is great for the ones in the front and side but not those in the back. |
Good question Kyle! it's so difficult with Pixie as she's very tiny and has a very tiny mouth! it's a bit of a struggle so i have to be patient..I use a cotton cloth wrapped around my index finger and smeared with a little bit of doggy toothpaste...I don't think i would ever get a toothbrush in there..or a finger brush! i'm hoping she will eventually get used to it and let me get further back there to reach those back teeth..i'm also going to be purchasing some petzlife spray & gel and give that a go. I have also been giving her fresh raw bones from the butchers..they have helped to dislodge some of her retained baby teeth so i'm hoping it will also keep some of that plaque at bay too!:) |
