To pee or not to pee... Advice wanted...please! I have had Sebastian for 3 months now. We have cold winters, hot summers and rainy springs where we live. When we brought him home, it was very cold and I was worried he would get sick if I took him outside to potty. He is using pee pads in one small area of a room. It is going quite well actually. Here is my question: do I continue to use the pee pads or should I train him to go outside? I want to make sure I am making the right choice for my baby. Thanks in advance for any help! |
We have chosen to keep Hot Rod doing both. We boat a lot and thought it would be easier. We anchor out a lot so instead of needing to get into the dinghy and take him to shore we thought this would be a better solution. Also on a normal day, I don't have to rush home to take him out so that another plus. That's what is working for us. |
We've chosen to stay with peepads. Samson is peepad trained and has done so well with that. Since spring finally came we now take him for walks, etc. and he goes outside. But when in the house he still goes on his pads. It's better for us since we both work and don't have to worry about him having to hold it in all day long. |
Mine go outside. Even in the rain and winter. We went to WI this winter when they had 3 feet of snow and they managed that OK. My brother just shoveled a spot for them but they still wanted to pee on the 3 foot high snow. |
both for Kash Kash mostly goes outside, but that's only when i'm home and able to let him out. when i'm at work, i keep him in his x-pen with a pee pad, and he never misses! in fact, i think i need more than one to switch out while i'm washing another because he goes A LOT and the pad starts to stick after only a few days. it actually still sticks after i wash it, but only a hint. i use the pooch pad... he was tearing up the disposable ones. the small pooch pad at petsmart was $21.99 plus tax... the bigger ones are more expensive (obviously), lol. good lucK! |
I hate the smell of urine so I really try to train him to go outside, but it's never fully worked because I'm not home enough to make it stick. If I was home more though I'd definitely go with outside. |
Mine go both on washable pee pads and outside. I think it's the best of both worlds for the reasons mentioned above by others. I think your yorkie will adapt to whatever you decide, so just decide what's right for you! |
As you can see, we live in a similar climate, and we have trained ours to go outdoors. She doesn't seem to mind snow at all. We just take an extension leash, open the sliding glass door (as we stand inside:)), and she runs out to do her business and comes back in. It works great unless the grass is wet:(. Then we find surprises in the house (poop!!!) Anyway, she does fine in all conditions. We just don't leave her out there any longer than it takes to do the poo or pee. |
i would do both. |
for the most part.. our girls go on the pads.. but we do take them out for walks and the use the washroom quite well out there, too. Now, since you live in cold weather (or completely hot where you don't want to walk out the front door) like us.. I would say continue training him on the pads.. if it doesn't bother you.. then I don't see a problem... I am glad my girls potty on the pad.. because we have this awesome (sarcastic) Chicago weather.. and there are sooo many times that I wouldn't dare take the girls outside. Good Luck, let us know what you decide |
Thanks! Thank you to all of you for your advice! I have decided to go with the pee pads. It seems to work the best for me and thanks to all of your help, I feel confident that I am making the right choice! You are the best!! |
