This is Layla, is anyone else scared of thunder? It is thundering right now and i'm a very scared girl. Mommy wraps me up tight in a blanket and holds me close but i still shake and cry. Is anyone else scared of the thunder??? What do your mommies and daddies do to make you feel better?? |
Hi Layla! I wasn't scared of thunder when I was a baby, but I am scared now! Go figure. I am also scared of the garbage truck. It's like a dinosaur going down the street. My mama fixed up my crate for me to hang out in when she is not home. I feel safer there. When she's home, I make her hold me REAL TIGHT! |
Me too!!!! About a month after I came to mommy's last year we had a bad storm that included micro-bursts and picked up the gas grill and dropped it on the other side of the deck! Wind, heavy rain and thunder storms scare me soooo much. Mommy wraps and holds me too but I still shake too.:animal-pa |
Hi Layla, this is Jake.:) I used to be scared of thunder, but I'm not now.:animal36 When I was a baby, my mommy would hold me and play with me, and then I wouldn't think about it anymore!:D But, my brother Jackson is still scared. He runs to mommy and cries. |
I have one with severe storm phobia. It's so sad. Here's a couple recent threads on it. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ml#post1737681 http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...id-storms.html Mine has severe phobia, not just fears. The wrapping is the only thing that even makes a difference. |
Mine aren't but I read that you aren't supposed to baby them during the storm. Doing so makes them even worse. |
Hello my Layla bug, this is Simon. I'm not scared of thunderstorms so I will come over and protect you, ok? Love you~ |

we had bad thunder this morning.. Kayah was never scared of it.. but Evie stuck her butt so deep under my chest (I was sleeping).. I though she was going to have a heart attact.. I just held her tightly the way she was and soon it stopped |
Maybe it would be worth trying to get her attention on something else..... like a favorite toy.... doing tricks for a favorite treat... We had a mini schnauzer that I "babied" during bad weather .... and she was always so scared of storms.... I blame myself for that .... I made a big deal out of it and so she reacted in the way she thought best. When we got Shelby, I knew what I had to do. We played outside as storms were approaching (we could hear the thunder in the distance) and also tried to "ignore" storms when inside..... doing normal activities and not mentioning the "big booms". It has worked!!! These two don't even notice when it starts to thunder. |

OMG Marci, that made me cry. How sad. I'm an old toughie but I would have cracked at that one & wrapped her up & held her close. My "5" (I'm up to 5 & it's a long story) only get comfortable and take a nap when it's storming. We have friends that live on their 42' sailboat with a little maltese & whenever there's a storm she uses a baby snuggli (front pack) to tuck Chloe into. It workes well for both of them. Conner was afraid of thunder when he was a little guy. I got his favorite toy every time it thundered and we would play. He is no longer afraid. He runs and grabs a toy when it starts thundering, and he expects me to play with him. |
Our Bichon used to be scared of storms, she would hide behind the toliet too. Slade isn't scared, he barks at them, silly boy! |
Bernie's not afraid of much...silly boy. Ginger just barks at the really loud thunder, but doesn't cower or hide. I do believe if you baby them they just get worse, but don't know what I'd do if one of mine were hiding behind the toilet.:) I'd probably rescue her too!!! |

Gizmo can predict the weather better than the weather channel. He knows when it's going to rain before I do. It's the only time goes to the closet and burries up in the blankets. Rarely is nobody home at my house but if there's a chance of weather, I leave my closet open a bit so he can make his nest and hide til it's over.;) I have meds for when it's really bad, but rarely have to use them. |
My fur baby is not afraid of storms which is a very good thing as we have been getting them at least once a week or more. Some pups get upset as the thunder hurts their ears. To some of them the sound is very painful. In the past with other babies that I have had, not Yorkies, I try to keep the TV or a radio on during the storm to help ease the noise. This was very helpful when they would get scared and very stress over fireworks. During the 4th of July I kept them wrapped up and next to me while watching the TV. I did not coddle them, but kept their ears from getting to much noise. |
Hi, Sydney here. I am scared to death of storms. My mommy can tell a storm is coming before it gets here by the way I pace and pant. Once it hits I shake like crazy. My mom trys to console me but I can't sit still long enough. I am going to make my mommy read those links that were provided so she can learn what to do to help me not react to those loud storms. |
Aww Layla I'm sorry you were scared! My Jamie is not scared of thunder but he is scared of lighting. Go figure. We just try to keep the lights on in the living room so that he can't tell its lightning. Maybe whe it storms your mommy can turn the tv up so you can't hear it as well or distract you with a game? |
My tiniest Yorkie became terrified of storms about 5 yrs. ago when we were coming home from MS in a horrendous thunderstorm. She's even afraid when it just drizzles. I can't even hold her, she is in such a panic. Circles, circles, circles. I give her PetCalm. The first dose doesn't touch her so I try to give it before the storms come. The second dose helps. She's still afraid but not in a total panic. She'll at least lay down beside me and just shake. |

Cooper is scared of the smoke alarm !!! It went off one evening while I was cooking.(I forgot to turn the fan on ) Cooper skidded across the kitchen floor and dove under my bed. I couldn't coax him out , I just had to wait for him to come peeking around the corner to scoop him up and cuddle. I dont think we have had any thunder yet , so I hope he isnt . |
Marci, the next time this happens, just talk to her in a normal voice, pick her up, take her to the fridge and raid her favorite treat.........cheese!! :D |

Hi, Katy here, I love storms!! Mom and Dad take me out to the garage and we get the lawn chairs out, so we can watch the storms. We have lots of fun. We wait for the big bolt of light then, Mom and Dad yell, "Ka Boom"! when the big sound comes. Its a lot of fun. Maybe your Mom and Dad can play games with you during the next storm.:animal-pa |
Mine arent scared of it but my other dog charlie(RIP) used to be petrified of it and hide in the closet or under the bed. |
Its heartbreaking to watch your babies cower in fear isn't it? Mine are not afraid of storms at all, they don't even notice when it thunders.. however one of my boys is TERRIFIED of my dishwasher. Just MINE though. Any other house with a dishwasher running he is fine, but not at his own house. It breaks my heart though. I don't baby him and I don't pick him up and Ive often tried to sit on the floor near the dishwasher or give him a treat if he comes close to me while Im close to the dishwasher but nothing has helped... when its running he is at my feet or as close to me as he can get and shakes soooo hard! :( I don't want to coddle him and inadvertantly encourage this fear, but I also can't stand to watch him suffer in such extreme fear by himself. He is afraid of trash bags also, but not as bad. He's also afraid of running water in the kitchen sink but again not as bad. Oh yeah, and my 2 boys are the first dogs Ive ever owned who are not afraid of fireworks either... they watch them! haha |
Hi Layla. This is Loki. I hate thunderstorms. Mom puts a tank top on me and puts my bed in the closet. She used to go and get me out of the closet but I like I feel safe in there so once the storm starts she gets my bed and blankie and off to the closet we go! |
Thunder Help Quote:
For next time there is a storm have some Dr. Bach's Rescue Remedy around (you can get this at Whole Foods or another health food store and put 3-4 drops in her mouth every 2-3 hours. |
