I need some help for my new puppy!! I'm bringing Bandit home in one week and me and the hubby are going to be shopping this weekend for everything he is going to need. We are getting a play pen so we can keep him seperated from my mother-in-laws dog (Bandit has to stay there until we get into our apartment. but I will be there everyday for him.) Bandit will be 9 weeks old when I pick him up. ok so here are my questions....how long do I have to keep Bandit seperated from other dogs? How long until I can take him outside?What are some things I will need to buy for him? I'm trying to think of more questions, but these will do for the moment. Just so everyone knows....I am putting Bandit in the play pen with his food, water, bed, blankie, toys and pee pad. Is there anything else I should have in there for him? This is my first puppy so I want to do this right and make everything perfect for him. |
I never kept any of mine seperated from the other when I brought them home. If I wasn't there to supervise them, I did place "the newbie" into a play pen/ Don't take Bandit into public places until he has had all his shots. That will be along the age of 15 - 16 weeks. Depending on what he's received before you get him. You can take him outside at your home providing you have an area where no strange dogs have been...meaning dogs whose vaccination history you don't know. If you have a fenced backyard...that's fine. Purchase suggestions - CHEW TOYS! And you may want to consider a crate. Have fun shopping....nothing beats buying for a new baby. |
Thanks!! Someone told me to seperate the dogs....it was a while ago but it was someone on here....cant remember who. But I do have a crate, where he will be at night. During the day I was going to have him in the play pen at least until I felt ok with introducing the two dogs because the other dog is quite a bit older and used to being the only dog and he is slightly aggressive sometimes (i've been bit before) but they will never be left alone together for that reason. The other dog I believe is a Shi-tzu mix. Bandit shouldnt have to live with them for more than a month (thank god) cuz I want him all to myself and I cant keep him where I am right now. I am supposed to be in my apartment at the earliest June 1st. Is there any treats anyone suggests for him? I want to start training him as soon as possible also, any advice there? |
Go easy on treats with the little guys...it tends to upset tummies. For training...a cheerio or tiny bit of cheese works well. |

Very true....thank you so much!! I think I'll take both dogs in the get checked out just in case, to be extra careful....I'm not sure when the last time her dog was to the vet. I am just so excited to pick him up :D |

Congratulations on the new puppy!!! I would make sure you have a few toys and chewies. My little guys LOVE toys!:) Have some training treats on hand, I found Cheerios to be great for this. A blanket with mama's scent on it is nice to have. Good luck! |
When I picked up my puppy I took a blanket and a stuffed toy and rubbed them all over the mom to get her scent on them. I then put them in his crate for bedtime so he would have something familiar. If you are crating, leaving a radio on low at night helps. Congratulations! |
Mugzy was/is very particular about toys and treats. They should be small, but keep an eye on them to make sure the stuffing doesn't get pulled out. Mugz has to have his treats bite size or smaller or he won't eat them. (Only exceptions are chicken and steak:animal36) He loves apples and cheerios, and of course cheese, and all other kinds of things that aren't good for him:D. BUT...NEVER CHOCOLATE!!! It can kill a dog. We used pee pads at first because it was cold out, but he never quite caught on. He was a year old in December, and still will go in the house occasionally. He NEVER will go out in the rain:p and I have to catch him quick in the am or he'll let loose on a pile of clothes ( or plastic bag.:confused:). We started him right on the Royal Canin Yorkie pup food...perfect size for him. GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY!!!!!!!! |
Oh, and we tried the crate for a little bit, but he wound up sleeping with us after the first nite, and hasn't left the bed since! He goes under the covers and will sleep the night through. When he was little, (ok, so he's still little about 6.4 pounds) he would get up around 4, go potty, then go right back under the covers. At first I would leave him in the bathroom with a pee pad if we were going to be gone long, sometimes in the crate, but not usually. |
I got maximus when he was 12 weeks old. I started taking him around the neighborhood right away, starting slowly at five minutes at a time and now at 22 weeks he is going on 30 or 40 minute walks sometimes twice a day! As for treats he has been so picky. The only thing he takes is grilled chicken or nature's variety freeze dried rww food. By the he has been on nature's variet raw food diet and its been great. I learned a lot of helpful training principles from the dog whisperer website. As for things to buy: I kept on making multiple trips for more toys. Puppy wipes has been helpful. I would Alfo suggest a play pen that is not metal: my baby has recently learned how to climb over it which is dangerous! So I recently got the plastic one at walmart that has smaller grates. I also had the problem of maximus dragging around his pee pad when he got older so I invested in a ugo dog potty area which has been great. Grooming tools are also imp. An eyebrow comb works great for his face and puppy toothpaste and toothbrush are also essential. |
