New Puppies not Nursing My daughters Yorkie just had babies two days ago. She had two girls and one boy. One girl, the largest of the babies is doing great but the two smaller puppies wont nurse. They try, but cant seem to catch on to the nipple. We have held them up to the mom and still cant get them to nurse. They search and search but just wont grab onto the nipple. We have been hand feeding them and then put them back with mom. Is this common with Yorkie puppies or have we done something wrong? What can we do to save these babies!!! |
pups Keep feeding them every 4 hrs until they get the hang of it...and feed them during the night also. Keep them warm and hopefully, in a few days they well be nursing on their own...don't stop untilthey are...best wishes |
They need that first milk from their mother for their immune systems. Get the milk started in the teet, put a little on the puppy's lips, and stick it's nose under the teet. They always push upward, so if you are putting it right on there, it will push up and will not be able to suckle. I gently, very gently, pry their mouths open a little if necessary ( using only my thumb and index finger on the corners of the mouth). Please try this and post to let me know that it worked. Stick with it until the pup suckles. I've never had to spend more than 10 minutes (though it feels like a lot more due to being bent over the whole time). |
Marie, I have always done what Julz is suggesting. Just gently squeeze the breast until there is a drop of milk on the teat and let the puppy get a taste. It usually works. Otherwise you'll just have to bottle feed them until they will. |
Don't know too much about this, but when my Pom refused to nurse her puppies at 4 weeks we had to hand feed them. But at this very young age I don't know,,, Good luck and I will pray for these precious tiny babies. |
Marie, how are your babies doing today? Sylvia |
Congrats on the pups. I was wondering how the pups and mom are doing? Are the pups nursing yet? I will keep you and pups in my prayers. |
I lost my babies. They were both so much smaller than the one that lived. I wonder if they were conceived later than the one that lived and mabe they were born too early. When I tried to get them to nurse they just didnt have the strength to suck hard enough. I kept trying but they never did learn to nurse. They just did not have any sucking power. I fed them myself every three hours day and night with an eye dropper. They seemed to be ok but were not putting on any weight. What finally happend is on the fourth day they seemed to just all of a sudden start gasping for air and then only lasted a couple of hours after that. What happened to them? I bought forumla for newborns, kept them warm, as I put them back with Mom when they got threw eating. Feed every three hours 24 hours a day. Can somebody tell me what happened to them? |
Oh, how very sad :( . I know you must be hartbroken. Was the mother stimulating them to go to the bathroom? Maybe they needed to be tube fed. Had you taken them to the vet? There are many things that could have been going on. However, sometimes these things just happen and that is what a vet will tell you. Did they get bloated before they got worse? I know this is all jumbled. How is your surviving puppy doing? Again, I am truly sorry that you lost 2 of your little puppies, my heart goes out to you. |
Im so sorry for the loss of the two puppies. Rest In peace Little Angels. My deepest sympathies. |
[B]I am so sorry to hear this news. I just read the post and I have some observations. Please do not think I am kicking you while you are down but it is NOT! This is an opportunity to educate the public about the pitfalls of in-experienced or non-mentored breeding. Now, I am not saying the puppies would have lived-only God knows that. I know you did the best you could with the knowledge you had. I DO NOT KNOW IF YOU HAVE A MENTOR! so I am not really discussing the help they give. Your vet could have shown you how to tube feed. Had the puppies been checked for cleft palate and lip? Did their tummies blow up like they had gas? Did mom do the pottying and keep them clean? Did they even have butt holes and urine opening? Did the babies have their own heating pad? They could have been preemies--what was the time period for the whole mating process? This is a good reason for limiting the number of days you allow the dogs together to tie.. I am so glad you did not lose all of the babies AND the mom. If you feel I am being harsh, I apologize. But, if we miss an opportunity to use a particular situation as a teaching tool, we have failed our beloved breed. Your loss will stick in the minds of other members and that is a good legacy to leave behind for those little creatures. Rainbow Bridge has more than ever.. |
I am so sorry for the loss of your babies. I had a little one who I hand fed on his mother, I would put them both on my bed and hold his head still or he would bop off, or mom would lick him off. He did not gain weight until the 5th day, but he did not lose any either. I had a postal scale I would weigh each pup every day. The babies will be 10 weeks tomorrow, and he is still much smaller, but he is fine. I also thought the length of breeding time (whenever they wanted, as they are my pets) was the cause. Sometimes it is just how it was meant to be, and there might have been nothing anyone could have done. You certainly put out the love and effort. Welcome to YT - there are a lot of people here who can help you, I hope you will stick around and let us know how your mom and puppy are doing! Post pictures :D |
So sorry to hear about the babies. My Missy just had a litter of 3 beautiful babie. 2 boys and 1 girl friday morning @ 1:00 a.m. unfornately the baby girl passed away at 9:00 last night. i had taken her to the vet, heart beat was fine and color good. they gave her an injection of fluid, since mommy Missy wouldn't feed or have much to do with her. I was dropper feeding her. Vet thinks she might have had a genetic disorder and mommy Missy knew that. I was told that moms can sense these things, and won't bond with the sick baby. The 2 boys are doing great! nursing from mom and bonding. We are very happy and enjoy the boys greatly. still missing the baby girl, though. I live in the northwest florida area and am new to this forum. |
Oh my gosh! That is exactly why I could never be a breeder! I know you are heartbroken! You did what you could and they are waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. God bless you and the little babies! |
I guess we were stupid and didnt realize that letting the mom breed whenever and as long as she wanted would cause us problems of preemies babies. How do you let them breed. We may want to have another set of babies again and I do not want to go threw this again. It hurts too much. Do you just let them breed a day, two or what? |
