Red ring with red dot in the middle on belly!! Today I noticed a red ring with a red dot in the middle on Illy's belly. I'm freaking out a little bit. I called the vet and she said she has seen the same thing on a few other dogs in the past couple of weeks, but she doesn't know what it is. She said she thinks it's an allergic reaction. I'm just wondering if anyone here has seen anything like it? |
It sounds like a Lyme disease tick bite. I would definitely get it checked out. This is what the rash starts out like: Usually, the first symptom of Lyme disease is a red rash known as erythema migrans (EM). The telltale rash starts as a small red spot at the site of the tick bite. The spot expands over a period of days or weeks, forming a circular or oval-shaped rash. Sometimes the rash resembles a bull’s eye, appearing as a red ring surrounding a clear area with a red center. The rash, which can range in size from that of a dime to the width of your back, appears within a few weeks of a tick bite and usually at the site of the bite. As infection spreads, rashes can appear at different sites on the body. Erythema migrans is often accompanied by flu-like symptoms such as: fever Hopefully that is not what it is, but I would definitely get it checked out. |
It could also be ringworm or a skin fungus/parasite. They can do a skin scrape to rule that out. I would start there as it is cheaper than getting a Lyme test done. |

It looks like a target. I asked the vet if it could be lyme disease and she said it's a possibility, but she said that the other dogs that have been coming in with the same thing have tested negative for it. She said that the others have been spreading also. One dog had at least 10 of these spots on his belly. |

It it looks like a bullseye, it is more than likely lymes disease. The testing for lymes disease takes awhile and while one test may not show conclusively, repeated testing may need to be done. From my understanding, there are several values involved and if any of the values has any increase, then you should continue with the possiblity of lymes. I would try and find a vet little more versed with lymes disease or get your vet to investiage further. My community has 13 homes and out of that 5 homes have been affected with lymes. One family has all 4 members affected. Good news is that 2 of them caught it early enough to be able to control it but the other 2 have been having some of the effects as they did not know they had it until it had progressed. Good luck and keep testing even though the 1st test came back negative. |
