Barking for Attention Logan doesn't bark at people or noises, but he barks if he wants attention. If he is in his "room," he barks constantly. If he's with me in the kitchen, but I'm doing something else besides playing with him, he barks. It seems like the best thing to do would be ignore him, but that hasn't really worked....yet. Any ideas? |
Linus used to do the same thing for attention. Ignoring didn't work, so I started saying "no" when he barked, and eventually he stopped. Now, when he wants to bark he gets sad and either makes a tiny quiet bark or just goes through the motion of barking, without letting any sound out! He's pretty smart because his fake barks are much more effective at making me feel guilty for ignoring him! Good luc! |
I resorted to using the can with coins in it. Barks every so often when playing is fine but when they bark at the wind it's no fun. Good luck. |
Chachi does that sometimes I clap my hands and tell him to knock it off and he stops |
Barking at people and other dogs!!! Widget is nearly 2 years old now and still barks at certain people and some dogs....I've resorted now to carrying a small water gun with me and most of the time all I hafta do is show it to her and she shuts right up.....I tried the can of coins and it worked at first...but then she got to where she would ignore it.....this works for us.....hope it helps....any ole spray bottle for inside works also.....:D |

I just started trying the squirt bottle with Tyson...unfortunately, he thinks I'm giving him a drink of water. I was told to put vinegar in it...but I would think 1 that would make him stink and 2 is slightly cruel. lol |
Jamie does this sometimes too. I tried the water bottle (he thought he was getting a drink too!) and the can of pennies (he barked at it). Then one day I started counting to 3 (in the oh so ominous way that momma's do) and when I got to 2 he stopped barking. I remember when I was little and my momma would start counting and I just stopped what I was doing because I did NOT want to find out what came after 3. Well neither does Jamie! |

Betty is a barker (and LOUD!) But I can't discourage her because many times, there is a reason. She barks to go out to potty; when she's hungry; when she wants me to play with her; and when she is jealous of my playing with Juju  So when she is barking, I say, "What do you want?" and I follow her. She usually lets me know! :D |
My Logan barks when he wants me to play with him.... he brings his toys on top of my laps and looks at me with those little cute eyes and "bark bark bark - play with me lady":D |
I did some research on the Internet and was surprised at how many articles I found that suggested ignoring dogs who bark for attention and then reward them when they are quiet. This takes A LOT of patience. The articles also said that barking for attention is a learned behavior that owners reinforce by giving them what they want. However, I have the same dilemma as someone else mentioned: he barks to let me know he needs to potty, which is something I don't want to ignore. I'm getting ready to take Logan on a 10-day trip with me, and I'm concerned about him barking at night at other people's houses. I want to try ignoring him (I also read that scolding or any negative attention is still attention and reinforces the barking), but that may make everyone else miserable :( I'll let you know how it goes. Wish me luck! |
Jackson is very vocal at times, and I always give him a firm NO. Then, he will usually sit and look at me....and I know he wants to bark so bad, but he doesn't. I tell him what a good boy he is and give him a treat. His barking has been so much better lately. :) |
The strange thing is that when we were crating him, he would NOT bark. But now that he has some freedom in his "own" room, he barks constantly in there. I will take him out for a long walk and bring him back to his room. Then the barking begins non-stop. It's driving me crazy. |
