questions of trick-or-treating (also, I'm new here) Hello fellow Yorkie owners, I'm happy to be a new member of this online community! I have a ten month-old Yorkie named Cricket, and he weighs four pounds. The vet told me last week that this is as big as he's going to get, so he's a tiny fellow. I've never had a dog before, and Cricket teaches me new things every day. Also, since I'm a freelance writer from home, Cricket is my constant companion. I recently had a debate with my husband over Cricket, and I was wondering if some of you could weigh in. One of my favorite books is "I Like You" by Amy Sedaris, a wacky entertaining guide. Sedaris explains that she has a pet rabbit, and whenever she entertains, she tries to sell her old junk for a quarter to guests on behalf of the rabbit, who she claims must earn his keep somehow. I've considered doing something similar for Cricket, but since I don't want to hock my junk to friends while they visit, my solution for Cricket earning his keep is via Halloween. I LOVE Halloween, and one of the major downsides of being an adult is that it's inappropriate to trick-or-treat without a child, and even then you probably won't get candy--the kid gets it. I don't have a child, and it will likely be years before I get one. So I want to take Cricket trick-or-treating so he can earn his keep. My husband is dead against this--he hates dog outfits, and he thinks it would be weird if I took the dog out like he was a child. But this is the only way I can think of that Cricket could bring in the bread (or, in this example, sugar). What do you all think? Do you take your pups trick-or-treating? Do they wear costumes? And where in the world can I find a costume that will fit a four-pound dog? Cheers, Sweet Potatoe Punk |
I love Halloween too, and it's pretty easy to find costumes for dogs; Target, Walmart, petstores, and online stores are all sources for finding costumes. In fact, YT usually has a Halloween costume contest. Trick-or-treating seems to have lost some of its popularity, and people take their children only to homes where they know the people well. It could be a good way to meet neighbors, but I wouldn't expect candy from it. If you greet children at your door with your dog, he'll probably be a barking maniac. Joey "earns his upkeep" by being an excellent security alarm. He notifies me of the possibility of intruders before they are even close to my door. He also does tricks for treats at his morning meal. But most importantly, he is the best snuggler I've ever known. |

Have any of you ever gone as Dorothy and taken your dogs a totos? |
And I'd love to see people's Halloween pics! Do any of you make your own dog costumes? What are some good homemade ideas? |
I personally love the Dorothy and Toto idea....however, MY dd...refuses to be Dorothy. Hmmmm, I'm up to three dogs...couple more and dd could just be the wicked witch. :D Mine all go trick or treating....be forewarned though...no one has ever given them a snickers bar...they got dog bones. Our neighbors have dogs which range in weights of over 100 plus....to 5 pounds. So mine received dog bones in EVERY size. |
I thought about that last year, they're coming out with some pretty cute Dorothy costumes, and yorkies remind me of Toto, my first love. |
By Halloween next year we'll be living in a brand new subdivision. That would be a great way to meet the neighbors! What a great idea! |
I takeChachi and Jewels out trick or treating with my daughter every yr but no one gives them candy. They do get some dog biscuits though. Jewels is a witch and I got her costume on ebay. Chachi is a firefighter and I got his from Petco |
My hubby and I love Halloween and always have a fun party for thr occasion. We always make sure Tino and Lola get in on the act. One of my favorites was dressing as Goldilocks and I had my "three bears with me"...Tino, Lola and Hubby! I made Tino a little brown furry vest and Lola a pink skirt lined with furry material. They were adorable! |
