Should I Change Food? ok, here's the deal, hope i don't sound gross, lol. nala has been eating purina puppy chow since i've had her. she hasn't had any problems whatsoever, BUT her poop smells terrible!! I know none of it smells like roses but if she goes on her puppy pad in the hallway even once you clean it up in lingers, bad. so is the puppy chow the culprit (spell??) if changing food would help and wouldn't hurt her i'd do it, but since she isn't having any problems and i've heard it can be stressful on a puppy i can handle the smell if need be. the breeder that i got her from feed her the other kind of purina puppy chow, in the white bag, but i didn't realize this so i got the other so without knowing i switched her food without doing half and half and she didn't have a problem but i guess you never know with these guys. any suggestions for my stinky situation?? |
As long as you gradually change the food, the transition should be ok. And since you have already changed the food on accident without a transition, I'm sure she would do ok. I feed Hercules the Eukanuba puppy small breed dog food, poop smells sometimes, but nothing major that seems to linger if that helps any. Brandi & Hercules |
when u feed your dog a superpremium food..the poop is hard and compact and has a very weak smell to it. The best one (for poop at least) that i ever tried was Nutro..but my guys got bored of it!:( So, good luck and like Brandi said...just make a gradual change of food so Nala's stomach can get used to it! |
Because Eukanuba and Science Diet have less fillers and more of what your puppy needs, there's less coming out the other end too. I hate to be so descriptive, but the waste is more compact and more likely to 'hold together.' I think you'll see an immediate improvement if you purchase one of these brands. Purina O.N.E. is also a less expensive alternative, kind of a middle ground food between grocery store vs. superpremiums. I prefer Science Diet; my yorkie has not had any GI problems yet and I have never seen a dog turn his nose up to this brand. They add liver flavoring, and dogs LOVE liver. Just a preference though ... there are so many options. Read ingredient lists too. Real meat and rice are good things to look for. |
i feed toby eukanuba small breed as well (puppY) and there is no lingering smell at all (and it does hold together really well)....... i was told that this was one of teh better brands to feed them so im stickin with it....... does anyone know how long you feed them puppy chow???? Toby is 4.5 months, but when do i switch him to adult food??? |

ok thanks babbie...... thats what the back fo teh bag said but the person in the petsmart told me to switch it  |
Iams is good too.......... I was told the same thing about Purina puppy chow. It gave my pups runny poop and smelled aweful. I always used purina puppy chow, until the last few months with our new yorkie. We are now using Iams puppy formula. When looking for a new food for them, look at the ingredients and make sure meat is the first ingredient, then you know you're getting good food for them. Not sure where my hubby read that, but it's true because I've compared since he told me. lol Men do know something!!!! lol |
AT 4 and 1/2 months , your puppy is way too young to take off the puppy food. My vet said to even watch the treats, because it would take the place of good nourishment in the first year. Like he said, a teaspoonful is a lot for these little ones. I feed Science Diet and she is thriving! Don't notice a bad smell with it. But I know he said any of the top really good dog foods is good. He just recommended Science Diet, so that's what I feed. Pat |
