Bows & Ears My GiGi is a little over 8 weeks and my first Yorkie Baby. Her ears don't stand up and I'd like to know what I can do to assist her. I've heard about taping the ears but I'm not sure how to or if I have the right tape. I purchased Latex free waterproof Adhesive tape from the drugstore but it doesn't stick to itself so it unrolls off. Is this the only tape I can use and where do I put it? My second dilemma is...I want to put pretty bows in her hair but to me it just doesn't seem long enough yet and I don't want to hurt her. Her crown fits perfectly but she tries to shake it off so I end up snapping a few photos then relieving her of the drama. (She puts up such a fit):D What can I do about the Bows and the Ears? HELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP!!!! ***Mimi*** |
I've never had to do this myself and my puppies ears have stood on their own but I have done some research on the topic. I've heard others use Scotch tape for the ears. It might help to shave the hair off the ears also because it can weigh the ears down. |

Thanks... I was sitting here looking at the scotch tape hoping someone hurried and wrote back.:p I wasn't sure if it could be used but I knew I wanted to try it. Thanks for responding. Now sometimes when we are playing, they stand up but then they fall right back down. Is she controlling this? |
Hey! How exactly do you use the Scotch tape? My puppy's ears are down too. One stays flopped backwards a good bit, but otherwise they both stay forward. |
bows & ears First the ears...you can have your local groomer shave the ENTIRE EAR inside and out with a #40 blade. Your groomer will know what I mean, lol. This usually has them standing up within minutes! The weight of the hair pulls them down. If they do not stand up on their own after that, then you go to tape. I have never had to tape up ears, so I have no advice other than to have them shaved first. As for bows, she is much too young at this point. Let her hair grow out for maybe another 6-8 weeks before you attempt to but bows in. I have seen puppies lose the hair on the head fron the owner keeping rubber bands in it and it actually kills the circulation, the hair falls out and the skin has a huge bald spot there that never comes back. Please be very careful at her young age. I am surpirsed you evne have a yorkie puppy this young. Sue & Cricket :aimeeyork |

Is she really concidered young? She has the biggest personality and I swear she acts just like I do. I forget that she's so young. She isn't having any seperation issues resulting from her early departure from her parents and 1 sibling. Actually she's learning rapidly. She responds to her name, comes running full speed when you call her and now sits on command. For the past couple of days she's even went to bed when told. I'm so proud of her! I'm definitely taking your advice with the hair on the ears and waiting on the bows. Thanks again***** Mimi |
this is how I was taught to tape ears. First make sure the ears are clean and shaved. I use masking tape. There is a little preparation first. Cut a strip of masking tape that will wrap around the ear about 2 times..about 4 inches... Lay it on a table tape side up. Cut a piece of masking tape about 1/2 inch long.. about 1 inch from one end of the long tape, place the 1/2 inch piece tape side DOWN This will prevent the tape from sticking to the entire ear and making it easier to get off. Now have someone help you, but pick up the long piece of tape and have someone fold the ear together length wise place the tape on the ear starting at the back.. place it so the section that has the 1/2 inch piece of tape on it is on the back of the ear. wrap the rest of the tape around the ear keeping the ear folded up to a point at top. Do the same for the other ear. Then cut a long piece of tape and have someone hold the ears straight up and tape from one ear to the other leaving a space in between. Wrap this tape two or three times. You will have both ears straight up and a section of tape in between holding them in place. remove carefully once a week by sliding a pair of scissors between the tape and the ear in the back where the non sticky part is. Be careful not to cut the ear. It should come off easily. Leave off for a few hours and if the ears aren't standing do it again for another week. |
Is all this ear taping really needed? Are the ears not going to stand up on their own if you just wait? |
