Crazy dog! I've been reading in every yorkie magazine, online blogs, etc. that yorkies are fragile and can be hurt so easily. I certainly felt that way when I first picked her up and felt like I might crush her little body! However, should I be worried about how fearless she is? I don't want to stop her from being a puppy and doing puppy things but when she darts around the room at 150mph she sometimes goes right into a wall or chair leg - is this okay? Like I said, I want her to have tons and tons and tons of fun and be the puppy she is but I want her to be safe too... Any thoughts or advice? |
Welcome. Hot Rod used to zoom around at first until he figure out his surroundings. He figured out that the coffee table legs weren't going to get out of his way nor the walls. He didn't hurt himself but he did bump himself a few times. He was notorius for following right on your heels and he got kicked a few times (I felt so awful when that would happen) so he learned to stay a couple of paces back and I have learned not to back up too quickly. I would say that your little one will learn his boundaries. Hope he and you survive thru this stage.:) |
HAHA!! The wonderful zoomies... Normally when Riley gets the zoomies, I open up my bedroom door. That gives him more of an area to run and I try to keep large objects out of his area. Lol. Riley always runs in the same area, so I know where to clear a path. Have you checked to see if she has any hair in her face? Sometimes when Riley gets to long, he will just walk right into a wall. I think jumping off of things, such as couches, is worse than getting zoomies. When they jump theres a larger chance of them braking a bone or getting LP. |
The other thing that gave me heart failure (and still kinda does) is him jumping off the couch! I have squishy pillows and and cushions all over the floor! Good luck! |
Thank you both for the advice - I was thinking of getting her a helmet! The pillows next to the couch is a great idea. My husband tries to play with her on the couch and she's had a couple of (short) tumbles to the floor but doesn't cry or yelp and gets right back up again to play. You're right about the LP though and I may have to enforce floor play only to prevent any accidents! Speaking of hair in the eyes - Maggie is 11 weeks old now, when should I take her for her first puppy cut? She's too squirmy for me to trim anything on her and I'd be afraid of poking her...best to leave it to the professionals. |
Riley is almost one and hes never been to the groomer. He really needs to go though. Lol. I normally just trim his hair myself. I started trimming his hair when he was younger, so he would get use to it. I use to trim it when he was asleep. He finally got use to it and now he lets me trim him when hes awake.:p |
