Stairs Just wondering how old your yorkies were when they figured out stairs. I dread the day, that's how I keep Carter confined to the living room and away from my roommate's cat lol |
Sophie came home at 12 weeks and it only took her a couple of weeks to figure them out. Good luck! |
We have one-level apartment and going out, I always carried him down and up the stairs. He figured out how to go up at the age of 4 months or so. Going downstairs took him more time :) |
Jake goes down the stairs like its nobodies business. But if he can see through them, he seems to be afraid of them and I have to carry him up. He is 8 months and he was going up down stairs within just a couple of days of having him with me. |
I think they learn pretty fast!! I also have cats and worried about Cooper getting scratched, but one cat really likes him and he harrasses the other. I have tried scolding him to get him to stay away but its not working. But he seems to be quick enough to get away when the cat tries to cuff him ! |
Mine was about 4 1/2 mos. |
up: yes. down: no lol. this is a question i have as well. Kash can get up the staircase really fast, but he can't get down them. he learned how to get up them probably within the first couple weeks i had him (about 2.5 months old). he'll be 5 months old this saturday and still refuses to come down the stairs no matter what i try to entice him with. if he's on the very bottom step, he'll jump down to the ground. but if he gets up on the second step, he can't/won't jump down to the first step, even though it's just ONE step. i think it has something to do with the fact that he doesn't think there's enough room for him to land safely on the first step, but the ground is so big, it doesn't matter where he lands. i just don't think he can calulate the space yet. lol. i hope he learns soon. p.s. how big is your puppy? i think it might have to do with their size in determining when they'll learn to get up/down stairs. maybe a tiny dog has less confidence in him/herself when getting down stairs than a bigger dog would because a bigger dog has more length to reach the next step easier. longer legs would help with getting down stairs, don't you think? Kash is about 2.5 lbs and very small in size, so, the invert is much steeper for him than it would be for a bigger size puppy. does that make sense or am i just off my rocker? |
Tyson was about 3 1/2 months old. I taught him how to go down. Everytime I went down I would take him and put him one step higher...and let him walk his way down. It helped him get over his fear. (i'm in a 3 story townhouse) 3 days later...he was up and down alll day long. Good luck! |

Wrigley discovered them almost right away when she came home at 12weeks, but we gated them off until she was about 6 months or so. We were scared to death because she was so small and our stairs are open on the side and top landing. We were worried she would go through the spindles! Now she masters them without any problem! |
sophie just figured it out at about 4 months old. however she hasn't conquered going downstairs yet |
We got Pippin when he was four months old and it took him a day or two to be confident with going up stairs. It actually took him almost 3 more weeks to be ok with going down them. I think he is scared of heights! lol |
Stairs 1 Attachment(s) I bought Oscar stairs to go up and down to my bed and he took that up relatively quick however... those are dog stairs and they arent very big steps. Going up he is ok with. Sort of. He will do it so long as they arent a huge staircase. that seems to intimidate him. Down... forget about it! He gets literally Frozen and fear. Actually last week i decided to put his front feet on a step down and see how long it would take him to jump down. I thought he would go if he had a little push... and well... hahaha see attached pic. I felt bad.. i wont do that again. But he is 5.5 months old and im starting to wonder if hell EVER get the going down part! |
Meeko caught on when he was about 4 months but, I pushed him to learn. I live on the 3rd floor and sometimes my hands were full and it was hard to carry him. He's a pro now! He loves the stairs. |
