Hose + Water bowl = Lead I just thought I would do an important reminder again now that summer is here ....Do not fill your pets water bowl, or let your kids drink from the garden hose unless it is specifically designed "for drinking" as in a RV hose.... they leach dangerous amounts of lead into the water coming out..... Wow, I didn't know! We don't fill pet bowls, but I have such fond memories of drinking from the hose when we were kids. :( |
Thank you so much for posting this. I live in CA and still didn't know it. They shouldn't be allowed to manufacture something like this. They should have to change the manufacturing process to better produce something more safe. It is far more reasonable to think that people will drink out of it and use it to water food producing plants than that they will not. |
I know what you mean...I was shocked when they ran this story a few years ago, I had no idea there was lead in a hose.....why this is allowed in beyond me....... We also drank from our hoses when we where kids, I even would grab the garden hose to fill our labs bowl...I felt so terrible when I found out what was probably in her water...... |
The scary part is that there are so many products out there for attaching to the end of the hose so a dog can drink out of it. There is a bowl that attaches to the hose, a nozzle thing the dog licks... Maybe I should carry them on my site just so I can include a big warning. I only learned this 2 or 3 years ago and my husband thinks I'm crazy that I want to replace our hoses. Can you just go to Lowes and buy a lead free hose? |
The Consumer Reports link I provided has some name brands to look for....They also said to read the label on the hose and it should indicate if it is safe to drink from..... |
Non-toxic hose The non-toxic, safe drinking hoses are usually white. They are very easy to spot. We keep at least one non-toxic hose in the backyard. If you are using the regular green garden hose, run the water for a few minutes. Don't use the water that sits in the hose. At least make sure you flush it out good and get new water in the hose. |
