Surprise! New puppy and Scout is NOT HAPPY! 3 Attachment(s) Well, I went and did it. I found this precious boy...and I wasn't going to get another one, but fell in love with this "big" fella. This is Ranger. He's 12 weeks old, weighs about 2 or 3 pounds I think...he's already as big as Pippa and will likely be much bigger than Scout and I'm thrilled with him. He has floppy ears-which I adore, but they probably will stand up in time (I kinda hope not). The only problem is SCOUT...he's acting out. He growls at the baby and is being downright mean. I know it will probably take some adjustment, but we are not letting him near the puppy right now because he went after him once last night. We are correcting him as soon as we see the body language (tail up, stiffens) and making him go to his spot...also blocking him from the baby. And we are trying to catch him being good (only happened a few times that he passed by the puppy without growling or actin' all big). Anyone else have any advice about your dog being aggressive to a new puppy?? Here's pics of RANGER! |
He is a cutie . |
Congratulations!!! Ranger is a doll :) Sounds like it will take a bit of time to get every one on the same page. I would keep them separate, and give Scout lots of extra attention, keep doing what you are doing (praise him for his good acts). Be patient and give it time, it will work out. Just don't try to rush their relationship, that is probably the best advice I have ever been given about adding to a furfamily. :):) |
SO CUTE!!! But I have no advice. Sorry! |
He is adorable!! |
Pictures today 2 Attachment(s) Ranger is getting a little friskier (Day 2 at his new home with no mommy and sibs) He wanted to play with Pippa this morning but all she will do is sniff him and run away. Here are some pics this morning! |
Cutie! Aw, poor Scout - he's probably just feeling verrry insecure; I know my Wylie felt very insecure and needy when I got Marcel - and I felt just terrible about it! So, I'd take Wylie in my arms, and, in front of Marcel - I'd give Wylie alllll this important good lovin' - so that Wylie felt all puffed up and alpha-like and first-born. Also, it's very important to let the dogs interact (well, within safe limits of course) so that Scout can indeed confirm that he remains alpha - that he is *safe* (lol) in his supreme position. He shouldn't need to get so aggressive about it - and it seems he might still be feeling that way - but he should calm down a bit. If he doesn't, you may want to go buy some D.A.P. - a calming pheromone for dogs that is proving to be quite wonderful. :) |
I agree with Wylie's mom...to Scout...Ranger is horning in on his home, and his momma. When Reese first came...we showed much more attention to Ramsey. She was greeted first, she got treats first. Now with Reggie...we do that times 2. The order is Ramsey, Reese then Reggie. At first Ramsey and Reese literally ignored Reggie... the if we ignore him maybe he'll go away theory. ;) One week later and they're all buddies. :) |
He is so cute, what beautiful coloring he is! Sorry no advice for you, I only have Jeter so far. |
Congrats on your new little one Tiffany!!!! He is just so adorable! I think another point is to make sure they all get the same attention/treats/etc...so one does not feel left out. The more time they have together, they will all come around. |
I want to add that if Scout did something wrong to Ranger, don't give Scout hard time, just take them away from each other. Otherwise, Scout will think that he gets more 'punishment' after Ranger came, Scout might treat Ranger even worse. Of course, keep praising Scout like crazy when he did something good to Ranger. He will eventually understand Ranger does not come home to take away mommy from him. Also give Scout more attention and 'ignore' Ranger for the first few weeks. This is what I did when I took Mochi home for the first few weeks. Kimchee finally understood mommy loves them to pieces and he accepted Mochi after 1 month. Good Luck! |
Congratulations!!! Ranger is adorable!! :) |
What a cutie:) I'd let them be around each other more, just keep them seperated when no one can keep an eye on them. I'm sure they'll be best buddies in a few days:laugh: |
Oh Tiffany, Ranger is just adorable! Congrats and good luck with Scout! |
He is sooooo darling! Congrats to you! I think Scout just needs time to get used to the idea of having the baby around. Good luck! |
Thanks for the very good advice, ya'll. Things are getting better, but not all buddy buddy yet. I spent more time with Scout and Pippa this weekend than the puppy, so my daughter is bonding with the pup (makes me just a tad jealous..hehe). I feel I have an obligation to them first, so there's extra treats when they are good to the puppy and lots of walks (I'm exhausted...but need the excercise..). I know it will take some time, but it will get better! |
Congrats on your new baby!! He is a cutie:D |
He is just too cute:) When we got Darby, sawyer was so excited to have a friend; but he was not as rhrilled with the idea of me having a new puppy. Darby is not thr type to be ignored; so after forcing Sawyre to play with him, and rolling over to show submission if Sawyer got miffed at something, they worked it our between themselves. They are wild about each other now, and cry if they are separated for any reason. I am not a huge fan of Caesar Milan, but somethings he says does make sence, our furfaces are really dogs at heart, and they adjust to a new member of the pack in different ways; but they will adjust. |
