Having your Yorkie shaved?
 

Hello!

I think I failed miserably at grooming our new puppy. Her fur is very cottony and matts so easily...it's getting out of control now!

I'm thinking of having her shaved. My husband and daughter or against this...they can't imagine what she'll look like. I think she'll be adorable. We have a bichon that we keep in a puppy cut and we occasionally get her shaved down too.

Has anyone had their Yorkie shaved?

I have had Buddy shaved for sometime now.
I have learned to groom him myself this past year and like him
this way. So much easier to keep. Buddy's coat is a silky one.

I really appreciate the reply and pictures. He looks amazing! I definitely think this is going to be the way to go. We sometimes trim our bichon a little bit ourselves but she doesn't look very good when we do it...lol.

I have done it to my Yorkies several times. I just always keep a little length on the face (so they still look like Yorkies). I am pondering doing it now but I always miss the long coats and mine are almost all in full coat right now :rolleyes:

I just had Bella at the groomers yesterday. For most of the first year of her life her hair was pretty easy to maintain, I could brush her every few days and she would be fine. It seems like since she reached a year all of a sudden she's matting underneath (belly, under arms, etc) and suddenly I had a problem:eek:. Well like I said I took her in yesterday and Jennifer did such a great job. She's basically shaved all under her belly and under arms and her top coat is a little longer and almost hangs like a skirt so you can't even tell she's shaved underneath. The length is just past her belly. She looks so good and now that she's matt-free I'll be brushing her daily to keep those nasty matts away! I have an electric razor and I think I'm going to try to keep up on the shaving myself, I don't know if it will work because she does NOT like to hold still:eek:. I don't know if this would be a good compromise with your hubby & daughter or not, if the matts are underneath this may work for you guys. If I have time over the weekend to figure out how to post pictures I will (I usually only get on the computer during the day when at work, not big on computer time at home which is where all of my pic's are). Although I must say, the pic's of Buddy are adorable, he looks great!:)

I think they look really cute in shaved summer cuts with facila hair a lil longer VERY cute look ;)

I try to keep Slade shaved down... He's just a puffy furball if I dont, I always leave the hair around his face b/c that isn't cottony for some reason.

A friend of mine just had her Golden Retreiver shaved and the poor thing looks so aweful. They left most of the head, legs & tail but had the rest shaved right down and it's a different, very much lighter color. He looks so goofy now! Attached is a before and after pic of him. lol

I give Gus a lion cut in the summer. He hates baths, hates to be groomed, loves to run (and roll) around outside and matts easily. We both love the cut. :D
I cut it when it gets warm and then let it grow out. So throughout the year he has the lion cut, a fluffy puppy cut and a longer coat for winter. It's great.

Lucy and Rebel are at the groomer's right now. Lucy was so tangled and matted earlier this week from wearing a sweatshirt that it took me forever to undo all the damage.

Her hair is so silky that she mats and tangles like crazy. I just didn't think it was fair to her to try to keep it long.

Rebel is just getting a trim. He doesn't get the mats or tangles like she does.

I also love the lion cut...I have done it before and it's very low maintenance!!!

hi,i had the same problem with mickey and he had a few matts. i got him shaved, the groomer said that the mats were probably hurting him as they would be pulling on his skin. i felt so bad even though he didnt look sad or anything.his fur has almost grew back and it looks so much better. i am keeping both his and his sister bella,s fur shorter now as it is so much easier to look after.

Poor baby:eek: Is this something they normally do or was there a reason they shaved her? I've never heard of a Golden being shaved before.

We prefer to get Chunk's hair cut really short and he looks really cute. At first my husband and kids didn't want it short but there are not the ones brushing him out. They now like his hair. He's 14lbs of pure energy and he really rough houses around with our Molly, our bassett hound and Gertie, our 6lb pom/chi. When he has the longer hair I can brush him out and within minutes his hair is a mess. Plus Molly leaves her slobber on him so he gets bathed pretty often. The three of go thru the house like a tornado. They especially like to play tag and wrestle with each other.

OMG love the lion cut!! get that!

No...the word "shave" scares the crap out of me! I would just DIE if I had to shave my yorkies..I don't even trust anyone else to groom them because I would literally kill a groomer if they accidentally shaved one of my dogs. I would have major anxiety leaving them to be groomed...it's not just hair to me..I really prefer longer hair on yorkies

Well my two went to groomer yesterday and had Apollo shaved , wanted an inch left , of course he ended up with 1/2 an inch :eek: Rosi got a trim to let her last schnauzer cut catch up:rolleyes: will try to take a couple of pics later....

Ginger gets shaved every spring when allergy season hits full force. She seems to be getting better this year so, we'll see... I keep Bernie's hair short too. I think he must have some poodle in him:rolleyes:the hair on his back is unbelievably curly and doesn't ever lay right, so normally he's in a modified schnauzer-cut similar to Buddy's.

There's a big difference between shaved and a short cut. The photos of Buddy are a short cut. I used to shave a couple of mine down every spring. They did look pretty pitiful but boy does it make things easier

I am very lucky with Conner's hair. He does not mat at all. He used to have cottony hair until he was a year old. But I do get him the "lion cut" for summer. Even during the winter, I do not keep his hair long. He hates it long. I can tell that he is much happier with shorter hair.

Oh my goodness, that is absolutely the cutest thing ever! he is adorable!

My husband is adamant about keeping Porsche long, but like someone else said, he doesn't have to brush her. I used to brush every day. She got to where she ran away from me everytime I moved!!!:cry: I finally have settled on brushing her, gently with lots of treats, about twice a week. I would definitely cut her shorter if dh wouldn't have a fit. She is silky. I would love to see her in a lion cut. I have always groomed both on mine myself, and I'm still working on getting better at it.:2puppy:

my friend and I co own a small guy... she just got his hair cut.. looks like a snauzer.. but he looks so sweet in it... i will take pictures of him as we are all heading north tomorrow.. so as soon as I can I will take pictures and post them for you to see how adorable they look... also I only will have internet as I find a campground going north with wifi... then when i do I will be on YT....if your still wanting pics at that time....anne

No, Golden's are not usually shaved and this was his first time having it done too. He had a thick, thick winter coat. We have a friend that has a similar dog who had her dog shaved last spring/summer and LOVED it. It really cuts down on all the shedding they do when summer comes. Otherwise they are shedding a lot of their winter coat and the hair is everywhere! She (of course) is bummed about the fact that he looks kinda goofy but LOVES the fact that he is shaved and doesn't regret it at all.

I really appreciate all the replies/advice. Mariah has an appt on Monday along with my Bichon. I can't wait!
