get 2 puppies same age and energy level.. your son will love them both and will learn to be a pack leader.. have fun and get gates and a doggy door with a fenced in area to promote learning to go outside.. its a big responsibility ..two was easier than one for me..of course all my dogs are 5 lbs, so i dont have a tiny.. they are special needs and i would be afraid of injury..best wishes |
A tiny Toy Breed around a 2 year old child in my mind is not a good idea unless you are willing & able to supervise at all times..these little dogs are extremely fragile!! Toys breeds, especially Yorkies, are not the easiest to toilet train either! and in new surroundings a new pup will more than likely have quite a few accidents! a penned off area will save your carpets. Goodluck in whatever you decide!;) |
No matter what breed of dog you purchase, consider yourself raising two children! Raising a pet properly is like raising a child. I personally, would opt for a larger full blooded yorkie. I'm all about the yorkies. I think that a chihuaua and yorkie mix would be a verry testy little baby. I don't see those temperments mixing well. Now, the potty training...you'll need to watch this little bugger all the time, and you will soon learn when he/she has to go piddle. You merely pick him up and put him outside. Soon he will learn to go to the door. The advice you've gotten is good. It will be quite sometime before your baby can control it's bladder. It's all up to you to teach him where to pee. I'm raising my Pookie (full blooded Yorkie) around a 2 year old granddaughter. They are getting along fine. BTW: Pookie is my first canine baby. (I don't call him a dog) Buy you a Yorkie book, see if it's really what you want to do. Good Luck! |
I would suggest keeping your dog in a playpen for a while (about 6 months) and then moving to gating in a room (about 6 months) and then when they are over a year letting them have more freedom. It's not fair for the dog to get yelled at a lot. Also if your husband is worried about the carpet hopefully he won't yell at the dog and scare it. A co-worker of mine had a little poodle and her husband would yell at it when it peed and the dog was so scared of him that one day he went to give it a bath because it had pooped and had some poop stuck to him and I think the dog was just so scared of him that the dog literally had a heart attack and died!!! He was carrying him into the bathroom and had not even turned on the water yet and he went limp. I think the dog was scared to death of her husband! |
The one thing that i am worried about is the fact that you want to dog to grow up with your son. i think you may want to wait till he is a little older. being only 2 years old he will miss out on the puppy hood fun of having a puppy. and will be about 14 or so when his dog dies. i think its a better idea to wait till hes a little older, can pick out his new best friend on his own, and can help take some of the responsibility of his new buddy. |
Chorkie or not Chorkies are a hybrid dog and are a chihuahua/ yorshire terrier mix. They ae actually bred to cancel out problems that chis and terriers have. THey have been bred since the early 90's. In any case they are a high energy, known for being healthy, very intelligent and affectionate dogs. YOu can "litter" train them but not with kitty litter. There is special litter for dogs. You can also pad train them. But YOU will have to train this dog. As you have a two year old you are very busy. And your child is still very young. Too young to fully understand how fragile these dogs are. These dogs are also posessive and can become snappy with small children if they see them as 'less than' in the family ''pack''. I have six children. However when my 1st was almost 2 my husband decided to bring home a very tiny chihuahua. He was sweet but LOTS of work and I found myself resenting him because I was pregnant and dealing with a small child and the dog just became too much. The dog was not getting the full attention he needed...so we ended up giving him to an older couple who could love and spoil him like we couldn't do at the time. My oldest is now 18 and my youngest 9 and we have a 7 month old chorkie. WHAT A DIFFRENCE. Thinking these things through and waiting for the right time in life is essential. My husband is like yours when it comes to accidents in the house. So I read all I could on positive training and realize that its the owners fault if the dog pees or poops ion the house. Knowledge and consistance is key. Just like with children. I can tell you I am enjoying this puppy in my life 100% and nothing feels like a chore. I think you need to wait till you have done having all your children and until your youngest is at least 8 and is old enough to understand how to handle a smal dog. everyone will benefit from you taking your time and waiting it out. If you do decided to get a chorkie...they are wonderful. I recommend crate training right away. Read as much as you can (internet is a great resource) on small dogs. I would also get it into behaviour classes( best time is between4-6 months) but I would look for one that teaches positive training. Good luck in whatever you choose!:) |
Chorkie I have a chorkie that I got a few weeks ago. When I picked her up at just under 10 weeks she was 2lbs. and now on Thursday she will be 12 weeks and is nearing 4 lbs. They are a small dog, probably won't get to be more than 9 lbs but they are technically a mutt after all so there's no way to know for sure. Be careful with a 2 year old.. this is a little dog. And you should know that these are babies. Accidents will happen and they will need to get up and go out several times a night. If you're worried about housebreaking keep the puppy on an easy to clean floor when you can't hover and watch it until it's housebroken. The yorkie in them makes them very smart and eager to please, if you praise them a lot when they do things well they learn what they are supposed to do and do their best to follow that. |
Just needed to clarify What is a hybrid dog? Is it the same thing as a mutt? A hybrid dog is a cross between two purebred dogs of different breeds and is not the same thing as a mutt. A mutt is defined in Webster's dictionary as a mongrel dog. Mongrel is further defined as "anything produced by indiscriminate mixture." There's the difference. We can't throw in a bit of Chihuahua and a bit of Bulldog and maybe some German Shepherd and cross that with a Yorkie and get anything other than a "mutt." In Webster's dictionary, the meaning of hybrid that applies in this case is as follows: 1: an offspring of two animals or plants of different races, breeds, varieties, species, or genera You will probably run across some who are opposed to Hybrid dogs who will make the claim that "hybrid" applies only to the cross of different species, such as a horse and donkey producing a mule. As you can see in the definition above, a cross of two purebreds would definitely be a hybrid and not a "mutt" or "mongrel. The fact that a Chorkie is a full bree chihuahua mixed with a full bred Yorkshire terrier means that technically, it is not a mutt but a hybrid. |
sorry, if accidental "chorkies" happen, I am fine with it but the whole "designer dog" thing upsets me to no end. There are so many good, reputable breeders out there doing genetic testing, careful breeding for traits and then Paris Hilton buys a pomipoo and EVERYONE thinks its great. It is just a great boon for the back yard breeders. they don't even need good, papered pups anymore! Because they are unregistered, the records are usually sloppy or non existant for problems within the line. a horrible idea, all the way around.:thumbdown |
Congrats and welcome to YT. Personally I would not buy a mixed puppy. IMO They are way over priced, you don't know what your going to end up with and they may not live up to your expectations. I have a year old yorkie girl, she is a possible mix. However she was a rehome and I just got her two months ago. Of course I didn't pay an outrageous price for her and she was quite cheap. I would prefer to get a yorkie pup from a reputable breeder or find a rehome that is a bit older and house trained. I just moved and have two dogs, both 1 years old. We have new carpets and have been here almost 2 months now and have had quite a few accidents on the new carpets. Keeping doors closed and constant supervision is a must! I also have a 3 year old toddler girl and have had her around small dogs since she was born, she does well with them and I have never had an issue. It's children who have never been exposed to small dogs who I worry about. GOOD LUCk you can do it if you put your mind to it! |
I have a chorkie too! Hello and welcome to YT! I have a chorkie myself. I live/am stationed in Japan where dogs are SUPER expensive. I think I paid $700 for my chorkie, Colt. He was the most adorable thing when I saw him! Although I love him very much , he is a mutt still :p I call him my $700 mutt. I wouldn't trade him for the world though. I also have a $1400 pure bred yorkie. I never went back to get her JKC papers that they offered me ( language barrier sucks here so I just gave up!), but it doesnt matter. I bought them to love and get love in return. Whatever you decide, I hope all turns out well! I just saw the title of this thread and thought I would introduce myself as a fellow "chorkie" owner :D |

We got Bandit without doing enough research and it was more than I bargained for. I would never change i thing now, but it was a lot more work than we both anticipated, and I never expected it taking a year to potty train him! I imagine with a toddler it would be extremely difficult to train and potty train your dog. I would just make sure you have enough time (and your hubby has enough patience.... (Bandit's accidents were the cause of many fights:rolleyes:) I love Bandit and now Nala too, and they are great additions to our family:) Good luck:thumbup: |
