Need Definitions to understand I am new to yorkie talk, I have 3 sweet babies....but I have read a lot about such things as Puppy mills, and Back Yard breeders , and I need some definitions. How do you define a puppy mill, and how is someone who has puppies only a few times not a back yard breeder. I know these are stupid questions, but I just need to understand. I have read many gastly reviews and I would like some verification. Thank you up front for being understanding with my ignorance. By the way, my babies are Bet, Jen and Bebe! They are the most beautiful little yorkies in the world, and I just want to be knowledgable enough to know the difference. |
a puppymill is a person with lots of dogs that they breed strictly for the money they can make with no thought to the welfare of the dogs. they will breed a bitch every time she comes into season for as long as she lives. they usually produce sick, bad tempered, unsocialized dogs that they sell to pet stores. a back yard breeder is someone with one or two yorkies that they breed to make money with no thought to the quality of dogs that they produce. hope this clears some things for you. |
My understanding is that a good breeder's first priority should be to better or improve the breed. They are breeding to the AKC breed standard and do testing to prevent dogs with genetic disorders. These are not stupid questions at all. There are alot of grey areas when it comes to back yard breeders etc. Basically my personal definition of a backyard breeder is someone who has dogs that they breed to make money not taking in to consideration weather or not their dogs are going to improve upon the next generation. A puppy mill has one purpose and that is to churn out as many puppies as possible at the lowest cost possible for the purpose of making as much money as they can, the wellbeing of the animals in puppy mills is not taken into consideration and basically these dogs only breed and suffer until they are of no more use to the selfish people that "own" them. I hope this helps some. And I am glad that you are asking because if we don't know these answers how can we know better |
i know there are a ton of people here that will be able to answer all of your questions regarding this so i will leave it to the people with more expertise than myself, but i just wanted to applaud you for taking the initiative to research and gain knowledge on the subject!! no question is a stupid question and it is great that you started this thread! i hope that many people answer this thread in a productive manner for all of our benefit!:) |
Great question. Welcome and dont forget to post pictures of your babies! |
So how can you tell if a breeder is a good breeder? If breeding just for the money is the definition (basically) ..... then how do you determine if a breeder is a good breeder or a bad? If they are breeding to enhance the breed - I like that idea. I think that it just makes sense to breed two beautiful yorkies that will made an even better one....but how do you know if the breeder you use does that? I have 3 beautiful babies (which I am still trying to figure out this picture upload thing) and I got them from the same breeder which I think are picture perfect. She seems knowledgeable and her yorkies are beautiful. She has a kennel, but every thing is clean and you never smell urine in there or in her house. I see lots of dog food, and lots of grooming equipment and stuff. I ask to see her breeding pens, Nursery, and I ask to see her breeding paperwork, and everything looked OK to me, but what do I know. What else do you look for? Forgive me for continuing to ask, but I just want to better the breed, not hurt it, I love my yorkies too much for that. :animal36 |
Just want to say hello and welcome :) |
welcome to YT - would love to hear more about you & your furbabies. There is a lot of info if you do a search for puppy mills or byb |
you are on the right track, just don't expect to make money if you start out breeding. if you break even you should consider yourself fortunate. study the AKC standard and your lines to make sure they are compatible. peggi |
