My yorkies dull coat Hi everyone, I'm new at this and just started posting today. I have an 11 month old yorkie. His coat doesn't have shine and feels a little like cotton. He's a healthy yorkie. I feed him wellness and last week i bought him missing link. I was wondering if i can get some advice on what shampoo and conditioner i should use. Rambo's Mama |
I am having the same trouble with my Luca Dean, but he was a bit malnourished. We've been giving him a vitamin E and a teaspoon of olive oil a day, but he still doesn't 'shine.' He's about 5 months and still has his "puppy coat" though. Anyone got any other suggestions, or should I ride it out until he has grown more hair? Some yorkies do end up with a "cottony" or "wooly" coat ... and, unfortunately, never grow the silky shiny coat that yorkies are known for. Here's an article I read about how to care for a non-silky coat: http://members.cox.net/jrogan/care.html She has included in the article how to tell what type of coat your yorkie has, and also how to care for the variety of coats. The music is not to my liking though. BTW, I use Miracle Coat spray and shampoo on Dean. Used Pantene conditioner for a while, and that was okay, but I read somewhere there's the buildup issue which can really dull a thin-haired or puppy coat. I use Hylyt on my other dogs and that works fine for them, but idd nothing spectacular for a yorkie coat. It is non-soapy though, and can be used as often as necessary. |
When I first got my Gracie I was having the same problem, her coat seemed dull and it did not shine  . I had bought her the Pet Silk shampoo " Phase One for Fine Low Volume Coats Shih Tzu, Maltese, Yorkies, Silkies, Afghans, Saluki, similar coat types. and when I bathe her for the first time, let me tell you it did wonders for her coat :D . They also have other products that can help like 'Silk Sheen" that it texturizes and revitalizes dry hair and skin, detangles and adds gloss. You should checkup this website. :) Hope it helps. :) http://mjm-petsilk.com/catalog.htm#mjmlink2.jpg |
Thanks! I just put up a poll to see what everyone is using. I am not happy with anything yet, but maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist. Luca Dean, if he had it his way, would never get baths! (Unless it was a mud bath.) |
Just wanted to say thanks for the advice that was giving to me. It's good to know that i'm not alone on this one. |
I also like Petsilk and Chrissy Systems. Petsilk tends to work better on my maltese and the Chrissy Systems works better on Mia's hair. The maltese hair has a completley different texture than the yorkie. Also daily brush with a good quality brush helps keep Mia's hair in better shape and looking smooth and silky. I did use some cheaper shampoo (leftover puppy shampoo that I needed to use up) on her the last 2 shampoos...she started looking duller and getting more matts. I learned my lesson, the better products do produce good results on her. |
pet silk has a product i think it is called liquid silk. it really added shine to buckeye. i have been using bo dericks bless the beast shampoo and conditioner on buckeye thanks to this forum and it has a shine to it also. ahia on the other hand i have been using the pet silk products on. her coat is still different from buckeye's. she is only 9 mo old so she still has natural shine to her. i think you would like the liquid silk. it is kind of expensive but worth it to me. nothing is too good for my babies. Duurstede is also a good product. on my self i use the $.98 stuff and i am an ex-hair stylist. lol |
I like the Mane and Tail for horses it makes them so soft and shines smells good too. It says on there you can use it on your hair too. |

Pure Paws and Plush Puppy The woman who runs Pure Paws actually breeds and shows Yorkies and she is a wonderful assistance with specific questions. She actually types out suggestions on how to use her products for optimal performance! Pure Paws can be purchased directly from their website (I think it's http://www.purepaws.net) but if that doesn't work just go to my website and click on the links and then click on equipment and scroll down to conformation - the link is there. http://www.mightymitedoggear.com Plush Puppy is distributed by the itty-bitty dog store. Again, the link is on my website, or alternatively, both websites can be found by doing a "google" search. :p |
