Gizmo doesn't bark??? I finally got my new baby boy on Saturday, and I love him so much already!!! He is only 14 weeks old and his name is Gizmo, but he doesn't bark at all....i have been getting a little nervous. I mean he makes noises....like he whines about everything....and when he yawn (which is the cutest thing in the world) he makes a noise right before he is finished his good yawn. I was just wandering if this is normal, or if there is something wrong with him. I mean he is still a baby....but I thought they r born knowing how to bark?!?! I also know he is not deaf b/c when we play with his squeaky bone toy....he loves it when we make the bone squeak....thats when he plays with it!!! :animal36 I have another question....now I know that potty training a baby yorkie is next to impossible.....but I know there are potty trained yorkies out there!!! I just don't knwo how I am supposed to potty train Gizmo??? We bought some puppy training pads for him to go on.....but he never decides to actually relieve himself on them.....to add insult to injury....he normally goes right beside the training pad!! Which is both annoying as well as cute!!! We have a whistle that we blow wen he goes on the floor....just to distract him from continuing on the floor so we can pick him up and take him to the pad. We then make him sit on the pad for a while and after he is finished sitting on the pad we soak up some of his pee with the pad and let him sniff it....so he knows to go on the pad......I was wondering if we are on the right track with this potty training thing....or if there are different or better ideas about it. Thank very much. |
A new baby! Aren't they fabulous? You may just have a non-barker! I hope he has one :) He may begin to use it when he's more settled. My Trixie was a bit scared when I first brought her home...she barks ... or should I say shrieks. Perhaps count your blessings on this one :) I used the pee pad and crate. Trixie hit the pad sometimes, and had many mistakes. She is now 5 mos. and is doing so much better (thank goodness). Just be persistant and try to "catch" her and respond with a kind, yet stern "no". Then take her outside (or on the pee pad). When I began using the crate a bit more steady (I really wanted her out playing with us all the time, as I'm sure you do too), and taking her directly outside from her crate, she really made better progress. Good luck! |
My Rusty didn't bark as a pup.. The first time he did, I had to shout and let everyone know LOL! I also taught him to bark as a trick, so that no-bark could be taught...for the middle of the night you know. As far as training, he was not hard. It took him 2 weeks tops. We started by having pads down in 3 places so he was always within near reach to a pad and I bought some of that stuff in a bottle to help him find the pads........no problem. We also took him very frequently, maybe once every 3o minutes so he learned what we wanted... As he grew bigger I eliminated the extra pads one by one until there was one. He then decided he would rather use the outdoor facilities, so he does, and very, very, very rarely does he ever use the inside pad anymore. |
You want barking? I'll trade you Tink! She found her barker the second day I had her! She has one stuck in each fur pocket just in case she loses one! LOL |
Oh, I almost forgot...Yorkies are very clean and dainty which is probably why your baby uses the side of the pad...you see, someone else has already used that pad to his way of thinking (you know the smell built in?) so your baby is using a little leftover inch of the pad that hasn't been used............ In my experience, most Yorkies will not naturally eliminate like other dogs will in the same spot and you will spend more on pads than you ever dreamed possible.......... brands of pads matter too... one may work better than another for your baby........ Just saying..... I would spray the edges with the bottle stuff making the center of the pad cleaner or try changing brands. |
My little chihuahua, Bitsy, didn't bark until she was 7 months old!! And now she won't stop!! Yip Yip:animal36 She made this adorable chirping sound like a little birdie! Hopefully yours will be a quiet one!!:) |
Thank you for all the good suggestions....I will definitely try all the training tips....I think I need to go out and buy some of the spray for the pads....I thought that using his own urine would suffice...but i guess I was wrong.......About the barking thing...I guess I am going to count my blessings, and enjoy my non-barking puppy!!!! |

Neither Chipper or Snowboy barked until about 6 mo. Chipper still doesn't bark much, but the Pommie.......well, let's just say he is a Pommie.:D |
I just wear earmuffs! Looks a bit funny in 95 degree hot florida summers but, muffles the yaps! ;) |
Bella didnt bark until she was about 7 months. The first time she did she looked around like "did i make that noise?" She still doesnt bark that much. |
Be careful what you wish for. Bubba barked when we got him. Sissy didn't bark for weeks and now when she barks we really pay attention-it is like someone is killing her it's so high pitched. |
LOL I said the samething when I got Buddy at 14 1/2 wks. Lucky me he does not bark! Right, give him another month or two. When he finds out he can you will be training him not too:p Yorkies are not impossible to train. Buddy was trained by 5-5 1/2 mos and has never had an accident. He is 4yrs old now. I crate trained him. It took persistence but in a month he was completely house broken. Good luck, |
Jezebel did not start barking until she was about 4 months old. I was a little worried she would never bark. The strange thing is, she only barks to get her way, like when I go in a room and shut the door without her, or she wants to get on the couch with me. I have never used pads with her. She is 6 moths old and has not pee-peed inside in over a month. The pooing is different, she has a poo accident about once a week. I'm hoping she will soon do both outside. |
