Frontline plus SHOULD have a warning on the box if it doesn't. I had to take Rio in and they had to make a formal report about it to the company. Why they don't have a warning on the label for toy dogs is beyond me. I am not going to put anything in or on my dog if even one dog has had issues with it. I do not feel it is worth the risk when there are other options out there. |
Well I took Daisy to the Vet yesterday and they gave me frontline plus, I asked her and she said that it is fine for dogs up to 22 pounds that she has lots of people with small dogs. Maybe their labeling is wrong: On the front it says 11-22 but if you read the materials inside it says puppies and dogs up to 22 pounds. I put it on Daisy and she has been fine. So maybe it is like anything, some dogs can have a reaction to it. |
I use frontline plus and have had no problems. The only thing I have ever noticed that I am not even sure can be attributed to FP is that one of my girls has a strip of fur on her shoulderblades (where you apply it) that appears to be broken off. I had posted a thread about it a while back. I have not had any health issues though. My husband has talked about switching them for a few months though. He is convinced that after a while the fleas start to become immune to the treatment. I do not know about that, but as long as what I use works without any bad side effects I don't mind switching. |
You can probably attribute that to the Plus, the same thing happened to Rio but I still am not sure if it looked burned or if it irritated him so much he might have scratched it off. He looked like he had a chemical burn from a bad perm on the ends. That was right before he looked like he had been dipped in boiling water. That came the 2nd day. I think it is just too strong for them. No probs at all with the Top spot tho. |
My vet gave this to Callie too. I trust him completely...do the vets not know this isn't a good thing yet or what? |
My Vet Gave Me Frontline And I Trust Him ;) |
I asked my vet and said that these symptoms have happened with all sorts of different flea products on different sized dogs through the years. Some dogs are more allergic to things. Afterall, it is a pesticide, so I think there is chance with anything you put on. |
I use top spot on Mojo and Plus on Minnie...never had a problem, thank God! I will be switching Mojo to Plus also when i run out of topspot. Before they used to state that the frontline plus (orange) was from 11-22lbs, but now merial (who makes frontline) just advertises as being up to 22lbs, and also the topspot is up to 22lbs. I just went through a small "investigation" on frontline produts, the recomendations have to be approved by EPA so it is considered safe, that is probably why they do not have to have a warning label on the box. But like any new product, if after first use the dog shows a reaction the use should be discontinued, i would also contact merial direclty and speak about the problem i am having. When i called their customer service line i was helped in a very pleasant way... Also, they offer a spray treatment as well. |
Lida Rose can't use the frontline plus even in a reduced dose. When I first treated her with it, the hair around the area I put it started falling out, and that continued down her spine around her head and then her sides. It was like as the medicine moved the hair fell out. I took her back to the vet (she was on 1/2 tube) and he switched her to the advantix. He told me that some dogs were allergic to the frontline, especially smaller ones, just like some people are allergic to certain soaps or medicines. He did not think it was life threatening but said like any allergy it could be. Since switching her now her hair is starting to grow back. She would also drool right after the application, when I first got her she had been treated but she was drooling then too. Other than that I use the frontline plus on my other 2 without any problem but to make things easier they will all get the advantix next time. I think it's an individual thing just like shampoo preference or cold remedies, our dogs are each unique and we use what works best for each one. I hate using things like that but the alternative is worse! |
