Reminder to watch for hawks or buzzards! My husband and I had our boys outside for a bit this evening, and my husband looked up and noticed three hawks circling our yard. We picked the boys up and brought them in. There seem to be lots of hawks and buzzards out this year where we live. Just thought I'd post a reminder, as I know that these birds can swoop down and grab the smaller dogs.:( |
I see hawks every now and then. My boys are bigger but I still watch out for them. Let me ask this..... I thought buzzards were scavengers and didn't eat live things. There are a lot of those here. Does anyone know if that's true |
Turkey Buzzards / Turkey Vultures are scavengers... they don't hunt anything alive...but Hawks, Eagles & Owls will all snatch a yorkie in a second if they are hungry. :( |

As for if they will eat something live, I'm not sure if they would kill to eat. I'm just not willing to take any chances with my guys. Jake is really tiny, so I'm always extra careful with him.:) |

I was out mowing the lawn for the first time this year and the kids were out too enjoying the sunshine. A hawk flew right passed me and caught a robin. Scared me to death so in the house went my babies. I've noticed alot of them this spring around here.:animal-pa |
We got a couple of hawks hanging around every day too. I allways watch, i am allways with my two and they are never left alone ! |
I am so glad you posted this warning. We have 100 acres of woods behind our house, so we see a great deal of wildife around here. With my 5 mo. yorkie, I've been petrified of the hawks, as I have been warned. I was going to ask if it has happened to anyone to find how much of a problem it is. I suppose I was hoping to relieve some of my fear, but after reading this post realize it is real and I have reason to be a pacing mommie when she's outside. I want her to enjoy the outdoors so I let her out when the kids are out in the yard, but find myself on the porch keeping watch. What's the balance? Trixie had a blast running around the yard yesterday with our "old man" Westie, "Rascal," and all the kids. I'd like to be able to let her out when the kids are out but can't always be there. I suppose I should bring my baby in when I can't be out there, right? |
I was coming home the other day from town, I went around a curve when something flew up from the side of the road-ditch like area. It was a hawk so I honked my horn which scared it & it dropped a HUGE rat, it just fell through the air which wasn't very high when I honked. I've NEVER seen anything like that before. |

I also wonder how bold hawks (and owls I suppose) are. Is it enough protection for me to stand in the yard, on the deck, or should I have her on a leash when she's outside? It's a very scarey thing for me. |
I'm glad we dont have to worry about that here. |

Thank you for the timely reminder. With spring here our furbabies are wanting to have more outside time. I always scan the sky before letting any of my crew outside even when they are just on our covered porch. |
This is a very good reminder Selina, thank you! We all do need to be extremely careful when we let our babies outside...you never know what is lurking! |
it's important that we keep an eye in the sky. |
Yes, they are out in abundance this year. We took about a 25 mile drive to my sister's and on the way we counted the hawks and there were nearly TWENTY!!:eek::eek: Yikes! I think we had better be careful!! |
Good reminder! Every summer we go up to our cabin and there are a lot of eagles flying around! Bella gets so aggravated because she wants to run and play on the beach with her dog friends and mommy is always joined at the hip with her! I cant just imagine her saying "gosh my mom is so annoying!" but you have to be there they can grab them in a second. |
Thank you for the reminder. We just saw two hawks yesterday fly over our backyard....so scary to think about them swooping down and getting Ziggy or Beau. We always watch our boys when they're outside. A friend of mine told me that a hawk got her neighbor's Yorkie. They were in their yard, the hawk flew down and grabbed him and then sat in a tree and ate the little Yorkie right in front of her. That is so upsetting and sad.:( You know we didn't used to have to be concerned about this...at least I don't remember it if we did. Wonder why it's so much more common now? So much to worry about...coyotes, too. What can we do? I wonder can netting be purchased to fit over a fenced area in the yard? |
We have to be very careful here, we actually had a bobcat kill a turkey one night & the Red Tail hawks were trying to carry it off the next morning in our front yard! It was pretty terrifying! |

I had Abby and Daisy out for a walk on Thursday when a hawk flew right over our heads. I scooped Abby up in my arms and pulled Daisy back beside my leg, instead of out in front of me. The hawk didn't pay any attention to us, but it made me very nervous. |
I posted a thread about this a couple weeks ago b/c Ive had 3 near misses (TG) in the past 2 months with these DA** birds! One went so far as to fling dove feathers at me from the tree in my front yard! They can fly over 50 miles an hour and can drop straight or curve into an area to get prey. They are deffo NOT something to mess with as their tallons can rip a full grown mans leg OFF! I didnt know that til I called a wild bird place here in FL to see how I can get rid of them, and btw, you cant, they are here forever. So keep one eye on the sky and 3 on your babies! Stay safe out there! |
