chewing the walls Lola has been so wonderful for the past year--She stays in a hallway near a bathroom with her pee pads while we are away and has never chewed anything before. All of a sudden the past week she started to chew on the plaster wall in the hallway and has made a hole in the plaster. I moved the gate to cover the hole and now she has started another one! I am at my wits end!! We don't want to replaster it until this behavior stops but don't know how to stop it. I am thinking of putting her back in the crate while we are away and going back to the basics. Being angry at her when we return doesn't seem to work. She knows she has been bad cause she runs away and hides when we come home. I feel bad about taking away her freedom but what else can we do? Any ideas? morrislaz |
Boy can I relate! Teddy did this and it infuriated me to no end! Oh my goodness. I bought Bitter Apple and sprayed it on the wall at least 2x a day. After about a few weeks he stopped going over there to gnaw at it. That would make me so mad! But try some kind of deterrent on the wall, they smell it, and then they won't go near it. At least I know Teddy didn't. Good luck! |
Mine did that to my wood trim  I used the bitter apple and after a week or so they stopped too. If that doesn't work what about an x-pen? That way she could reach your walls:rolleyes: |
Is Lola by herself? She is probably just bored while you are away. My first Yorkie was a total Houdini, she could climb any baby gate and get out and cause mischief. We left her with toys and bones and the radio on but it wasn't until we got another yorkie that she calmed down and we would come home to a neat and clean house. She also used to bark up a storm when left alone, my neighbors were going to kill me!! |

I'm not sure how safe or good wallboard is for dogs, or if she actually ingests it...but what about getting pieces of it for her just to chew on? This might not be a good idea; I just thought about my parrot who chewed the walls and I bought him his own wallboard (of course, HE didn't like it unless it was attached to a 2x4 stud that he could also chew:( )....I think it's the sensation of it being slightly resistant, but soft enough to sink their teeth into! |
