Holistic veterinarian message to all yorkie owners
 
I was asked to chyme in on this wonderful website regarding very hot topic dear to my heart on the overvaccination issue, which is especially damaging to small breeds like yorkies. I would be happy to participate or answer any ones questions on this topic, which is so dear to so many of us who have embraced holistic veterinary medicine. I have been in active small animal practice for 17 years with my VMD from Penn and my undergraduate degree in animal science from Cornell. I've been concerned about over vaccinating myself and Zoe is coming due for all her shots as she's a year old now but I'm not sure what to do. What would you recommend? At this point, she's had all the regular shots normally recommended except for Lepto, even the Lyme's vaccine as it is prevalent here.

I truly believe in this as well! And found that my babies seem to do so much better! Of course if somebody needs antibiodics we are going to do it!!! hanks for posting your website!

Thank you so much for getting the word out on over vaccination. What are your recommendations on what age the first vaccinations should be given and what core vaccinations do you recommend, how many sets of vaccinations do you recommend? Also, there has been some discussion of giving just 1/2 doses of the vaccinations for Yorkies; what are you thoughts on this? Thank you so much.

What a wonderful and generous offer! I would also be very interested in the vaccine schedule that you recommend. I have taken Sugar to a holistic vet who recommended only rabies, since it's the law, for dogs in our area who are indoors only like Sugar. Unfortunately she had to close her practice and move due to a family emergency and so I am seeing my traditional vet and following his vaccination schedule which includes quite a bit more than just rabies. It seems both pets and children are being wildly over vaccinated but without an expert you can trust to guide you it's so hard to know what the right thing to do is.

Thank you Dr. for your opinion! I have heard of this before and thought about it. All my babies are already vaccinated and were when they were puppies but I am going to look up on this. I believe in natural remedies, etc. and think putting too much stuff in our babies is harmful but I'm no expert lol

I've always wondered:

Following the idea/routine of receiving less shots, should dogs that live in a city (and thus come in more contact with dogs than those who live in suburbs, the country, etc.) receive more and/or different shots (e.i. bordetella vaccination, etc.)?

No one vaccination protocol will work for everyone. It's all about the risk factors your dog is exposed to. I try to maintain a low-risk profile for mine so vaccinations beyond the 'core' vaccines aren't necessary. Also, many vaccines don't need to be administered yearly as the dog will have a sufficient anti-body titer count to make the annual booster unnecessary. This will vary from dog to dog so many vets play it safe and do the annual booster. In most states, the rabies vaccination, by law, must be the 3 year type so annual rabies booster is not recommended. There is a lot of good info on the web on this subject so don't go by what I or any one person says. Do your own research and have a discussion with your vet on the appropriate vaccination schedule for your dog. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :)
